Ok...how do I set my own timing? 1,2,3?

#1 Pull the number one spark plug, unhook all electrical stuff and bump the motor til a hear a loud PSSSST.
#2 Put the distributor in pointing to #1.
#3 Turn the crank to 0 degrees?

In that order? I have never done this and need to at least get the car going so I can drive it to my mechanic and he can put a timing light on it.. HELP?

if your doing it by yourself it might be easier to turn the crank by hand. remove the #1 plug and turn the crank clockwise using a socket wrench. keep your finger over the plug hole and when you feel the air start to come out stop. at this point you are going to want to keep turning the crank until the balancer is on zero. once your at zero stab it with the rotor facing #1 on the cap. remove the spout, start car and set the timing.

So I will change my procedure to 1, 3, 2 and give it a go!

Sometimes the exhaust stroke can give you a bit of air or pressure on your finger, so if you get things going and the car just doesn't seem to be running right, try flipping the rotor 180 degrees.

Exactly

I never worry about if the piston is on the compression stroke

I mean ... you got a 50% chance of it being right or wrong

All I do is just line up the hb/rotor and see if it fires

If it don't ... spin the rotor 180 and it will fire
