I was at my local autozone picking up some fluids for the car and, since I go there fairly often, the manager started chatting with me and we started talking about the mustang.
I had told him that I was thinking about moving the battery to the rear side passenger seat and that I was going to need some 2/0 cable. He looked around, then took me aside and whispered "Just go to an audio shop and use theirs. It'll be cheaper than buying it from here!". He informed me that he used to do custom stereo installations so he knew a lot about wiring cars. I asked him "I've been told that audio wire is not a good idea since it'll be in the engine compartment and oil and grease may get on the sheath. Is audio cable oil resistant?". He assured me that it would be no problem. He was a professional installer remember! OK! From what he had explained to me made sense, for the most part, so, at this point, his credibility was at an all time high with me. Then it came.........

He just had to open his mouth and say "Don't forget to get a really good ground wire. There's a braided one that, if you use it, will actually increase your horsepower!". I kind of looked at him but I didn't want to be to obvious about the fact that he had gone from fairly knowledgable to complete idiot! I casually asked him "Really? How much horsepower does it give you?". He said "Oh, around 20 - 30 horsepower!". At this point I was about to break out laughing so I made a quick excuse and almost ran out of the store. Hopefully the door closed before I busted out laughing, I mean, I still gotta go back and I sure don't want the store manager mad at me especially if I need a favor!

On some vehicles adding extra grounds to different parts of the engine bay can be beneficial. Better grounds help the electrical system out. This can help spark output which can sometimes cause a small rise in HP. There's a lot more to it than this but adding extra ground wires IN THE PROPER PLACES cann add HP. However, if the guy thinks it's 2- or 30 hp he's clueless.

I remember I had a autozone guy try tell me I had a 4.2l v8 and not a 4.6. He refused to listen to me so I walked out.

Scosche, Metra, Rockford and the like all make power wire that is suitable to run in the engine compartment. A wire loom is a good thing for the engine compartment run as the wire gets dirty easily.

As far as adding hp it does on alot of cars. I have personally tested the Sun Grounding System on a 89 RX-7 and picked up 9 rwhp from it. I have read tests too showing 7-15 rwhp on cars with digital or multi coil ignition systems. A single ground wont help but the 8-10 ground wires they have in the kits do seem to make a difference

I had an experience at an O'Reilly's. The guy asked what type of motor was in the car and I let him know it was the 4.6 with a single overhead cam(he wouldn't have understood the 2v) and he then asked why I don't just put in another cam so I will have dual overhead cams. I told him I would look into it and have never returned to that store - I needed some motorcraft pieces.

i know a few people like that. this kid down the street from me has a blazer with an open cat. i told him that he should of took the cat off and kept the muffler on, but he told me that he would have TOO much backpressure i didnt know that you could have too much backpressure with nothing restricing the exhaust

The grounding wires theory is very popular in the import world.

Guys on the G35 forums have their entire engine bays snaked with grounding wires.

On the Mustang, i'd just replace the single engine ground with a decent 2/0 ground cable. Ever see the factory ground? It's a peice of thin braided "mesh".

That intake manifold looks like Dr. Octopus with all that garbage hanging off. They ought to at least put some heatshrink plastic over the exposed wiring/copper junctions.

It's supposed to look like this, but some take the cover off to expose one ugly intake manifold

Whoa - I would definitely leave that cover on. I wish our engines had a cover on it like the S197's, that the only thing I like about the new Mustangs. I read all of the posts on that link you sent and I can't believe that stuff. I think some of those folks, just like some of the folks in the mustang community, would totally buy into the spark plug wires that add 21rwhp and the 25rwhp K&N drop in, or the +15rwhp muffler delete mod(insert any car part next to the word delete for 10hp). Some people aren't ready for the truth.

I had heard the reason guys take it off is for when they put in the plenum spacer. The VQ35 in the Z and G starved the front cylinders of air above 4500rpm or so. So there is a 1" spacer that seperates the plenum box to let the front cylinders breath. It raises the plenum enough that the cover comes in contact with the hood. Or so I have heard

Yes! I have an Optima Dry Cell battery. I don't have a back seat so I'm thinking of moving the battery from the front to the passenger side rear seat. This way I can take advantage of the polar moment of inertia that placing the battery in that location will give me.

I'm into road racing and Auto-xing.

Unsure if the cover hits, but the plenum spacer is a proven mod.

I'm debating getting one.

I did a little light to light action with a 370Z today and I sqeaked it out over him - was very close though (I need a refill on my bottle). The car was a real sexy red color. The new body design really does look great. Guy driving it was way too young to own such a nice car, but hey what can you do. If those new G37's can move like that 370Z then it's bound to be a nice car with some mods.
