Exhaust Old Mopar guy buys 5.0 needs advice

Hello 5.0 guys I have just bought my first 5.0 mustang it's a bone stock '94 Vibrant red Convertible in great shape for its age .My exhaust is a newer"stock style" system and way too wimpy sounding(inaudible) .I would like a nice growl but I would like to hear the passenger and the stereo!
I love the growl some of the exhaust systems 5.0'sI have heard produce and I would like some advice on a upgrade.I Have experience with 60 series (3 chamber) flow masters on mopars but 5.0 Fords are new to me and would be grateful for any advice! I live in California so I need to stay smog compliant. I am only interested at this time in upgrading the mufflers as I am on a budget.P.S. anyone using Xlerator brand mufflers out there?Thank You in advance!

In that case I'd suggest Magnaflow.

I have flowmasters on mine and they sound alright, i got a good deal on a set of catbacks. I dont think ya would be disappointed.. But if i could have what i want id go magnaflow.

I would suggest doing a Youtube search for "mustang magnaflow" or "mustang flowmaster" and look for a 94 or 95 Mustang in the search results. I like Bassani for the classic muscle car sound; here's a video of my 95 with a Bassani catback:

Thanks for the advice I Have heard the best tones coming from 2 chamber "40" series Flowmasters on similar 5.0's but I keep being told that these have an annoying harmonic "drone"at about 2500RPM (highway cruising speed) any thoughts on this?

Thanks for advice!I clicked on "you tube" your 'stang has a nice rumbling aggressive growl!Do you get the "Flowmaster" 2500RPM annoying harmonic "drone" sound with Bassani's or is a Flowmaster only characteristic!

There is a small drone, but it's nothing like the Flowmaster drone. This car had Flowmasters on it when I bought it, and I couldn't stand the drone. I barely notice the Bassani drone when driving.

Many get Flowmaster's because they are cheaper.

Magnaflow is very good quality, and you can get everything from the "street" seies to "race" Magnapacks.

Flowmasters are the way to get a nice loud, aggressive sound and stay smog compliant. I am in Kansas and we have no such smog regs and my favorite set up on my 5.0 was an O/R H-pipe and American Thunder Flowmaster catback OR Magnaflow catback, NOT MAGNAPACK! I put this same type set up on my 03 GT also and it was awesome! Deep, muscular rumble, not the high pitched NASCAR sound you get from an X-pipe. When funds open up more and you want to get a mid-pipe I would highly recommend a high-flow H-pipe with flowmasters or magnaflows.

The drone on Flowmasters is the most pronounced with the non-delta flow mufflers. I had a setup on my '02 Mustang that consisted of the stock manifolds, and off-road h-pipe and 40-series non-delta flow Flowmasters (2.5" all the way through). It sounded amazing (and very, very loud at WOT), but the drone was considerable between 2000 and 2500 RPM. Supposedly, the delta flow mufflers have a much reduced interior resonance; if any at all. I have no practical experience with them, though (but I will be going with them next on my '95). Part number for the delta flows is 942543 (42543 for non-delta flow). They're $90/ea at Summit Racing last I checked.

The 3 chamber Flowmasters are too quiet, and the 2 chambers drone too much for my taste. I'm still a fan of the Dynomax Ultraflow SS kit. They are still selling the whole cat back on Jeg's and Summit for around $350. You just can't beat it for that price. It's quiet when you aren't on it, and loud when you are on it. The sound is pretty much identical to a Magnaflow kit, the quality is the same, and it's cheaper.

i've got magnaflow magnapacks on my car...i'm not really a fan....i coulda went to advance auto and got some $20 glasspacks for the same sound. i bought the whole cat back kit with 3 1/2 tips. it sounded like a "jake brake" on a semi going down hill when you let off the gas lol....so now i took the pipes off and bought some turn downs and angled them out so they wouldn't resonate as bad.

This threads a bit dated, but I wanted to add my two cents on the flow master's drone.
My GT is all stock other than the flow masters 40 series, and a drop in K&N.

The drone seems most persistent at both 40mph (city cruising at 2000-2150 rpms) and on the highway at 70mph (2500RPMS)

Very irritating and sounds awful. Of course revving the engine it sounds good, but driving wise it's unpleasant.
Anyone who reads this, I highly suggest not getting these, even if they're cheap.

Some 3.73s will solve the highway drone. I never minded the drone except on long trips. Drove 1100 miles once in my stock-geared 02GT with off-road H and original 40s. I swear I heard the drone in my sleep.

I 'really really really really' want to go to 3.73s (hell I wanted to do 4.10s [automatic!]) but I do a ton of highway driving, my daily commute is minimum 15 miles highway, and can be upto 45 miles highway.

That made me laugh. I can hear that painfully irritating noise now...
