My car has been in storage before I bought it, in a barn. It has that "Hi, Im 40years old smell", the interior is almost mint condition, but any clue as to getting that smell out?

I'd try just letting it air out really good for a couple of days and maybe cleaning any fabric with an upholstry cleaner.

what she said and also put some fabric sheets under the seats or put some irish spring under the seats but put it on a towel if you do that. another thing to do is pull the ac or heater box out of the car and all the vents and tubes under the dash and clean them out really well, you wouldn't believe what a difference it makes when you turn the ac/heater on. other than that just give the carpet a good shampooing after the car has aired out for a few days.

I bought this thing at the hardware store which is some kind of dehumidifier, it's this bucket with crystals on top of it which is supposed to suck all the moisture out of the air and carpet, seats, etc. I suppose it worked because of the water that formed there but it seemed like a waste of 15 bucks because I still have a bit of that "Hi, I'm an old car" smell.

Take a sample in a jar, add some gasoline, used gear oil, then hold it under your exhaust for a few seconds. Put a lid on and shake.

Bottle it and sell it as "Old Car Smell". You'll make millions.



Or, cover everything in that powdered carpet deoderizer you find at the supermarket and rub it in. Let it sit awhile, then shop vac it up. This used to work for me in my musty old Renegade.

Had the same problem, replaced the carpet and 90% of the old car smell dissapeared.

You could also try sprinkling some baking soda on the carpet then vacuuming it up after a few days.

try one of those fridge baking soda packs. it worked in getting the smoker's scent from my current car.

Yeah, I saw that Fabreze ad too. According to them it will also get you laid by hot chicks who were once put off by your funky car smell.

Bah, the last time that I used Febreeze in my car it was to get a "mildewy" smell out and what I got was a "cat piss" smell. Not really any better...

I would also just replace the carpet, its not expensive and is easy to do. Did this in a 66 which sat unused for many years and afterwards, most of the "barn smell" was gone - new carpet looked great too.
