Several of you have taken the militant viewpoint of this type of concept. I'm looking for the practical family man approach. Let's say you get one carry-on bag each in a family of 4.

What do you pack in the event something unexpected happens and the loudspeaker says "One baggage item per person."?

I always carry-on the essentials so I don't need to find a drug store ASAP. Anything to do with my eyes since I wear contacts, and the rest of my everyday toiletries, a fresh pair of underwear, socks, and a shirt. Also, things like my keys are always in my carry-on. That will get you through a day or 2 no problem at your destination, or if it's the return trip, it'll get you home.

I always do the same. one change of cloths, toothbrush, something for a headache, phone charger and usually a pair of sunglasses cause there is always that idiot who wants to leave the window open despite the sun glaring right in your face.

So do you mean in the event of a sudden travel event assuming the world still functions? Or if the world halts and you have to bug out and take care of your family? Even without the bags of ammo? :D

Two totally different bags I guess and I'm not sure which one you're talking about for sure.

If the world still functioned then I would have to pack things like extra clothes and necessary medications.....because I could get them refilled. With a functioning world, odds are wherever I go I can get what I need. Thus I could travel with no bag and be ok. Well, as much cash as I can stuff in my pockets.

If not, well then medications are useless because I might as well get used to not having them and not waste the space. Things like a knife, matches, and water tablets seem more important.

Shelter, water, food.

Your needs will vary by your location, and depends on the situation.

If a train derails and there is a chemical spill and I have to take off (I live a quarter mile from the tracks). Its going to be different than an earth quake or a forest fire.

I have a big family, so I pack a tarp and paracord for shelter. With some older coats for warmth.
I also have some chemical water purifiers and a filter.
Then I have a box of granola bars thrown in to keep the kids happy. I have several of the mountain home meals in a bag.

This is for any scenario where I have to leave my house on foot and hike out to my parents who live 10 miles out of town. I know I could easily do 10 miles on foot by myself. But my kids are going to make it a 2 day trip.

My backpack can hold my 17" lappy, 2 pairs of pants 4 pairs of boxers/socks and 5 T-shirts. Toiletries can fit no problem, but that's something you can buy anywhere. A decent sized towel and depending on the circumstances a few other things.

Ie sandals if warm, bathsuit.

If it's cold I can wear a hoodie.

Nintendo DS (doubles as a Kindle) and Cell can fit in my pockets.

I spent about $20-$40 every month or two for a year collecting this stuff.

This is what I'm talking about. Mainly survival items: both urban and wild. I know, tough compromise and I was quite vague initially, but I wanted to see what you guys came up with on your own. :grouphug:

Keep the suggestions coming! I did enjoy the "soldier of fortune" bags you guys came up with last time, but that's a bit much for what I'm seeking to take stock in, put aside, and have it easy to grab at a moment's notice.
