One clunk on acceleration and then clunk when off? Manual Tranny

I feel a solid clunk on accleration from a stop and when I let off of the gas, I feel the clunk again.
I can be in any gear and repeat the issue.

I can feel it in both my hand on the shifter and through the car but slightly more pronounced through the shifter.

What am I looking at for problems? Where should I start looking? My guess is the rear end/differential.

I believe that is the drivetrain slack inherent in ford vehicles. I don't think they know how to properly set up rear end gears!

I've got the same clunk, and I've got barely 400 miles on my '04. The entire 3650 tranny seems to be pretty noisy as a whole, overall not a bad transmission though.

This seems a bit excessive and has recently shown it's head. I would think that something is either worn or wearing out.

So, to fix this, I would basically rebuild the rear end?

check to see if you have any play in your U-joints

I'll check the U-joints for play this after noon. If I have play in them, I guess I just need either new joints or an aluminum shaft

It's totally normal for our cars. Mine does it and so do both of my friend's stangs. It's just slack. I've brought it to Ford and they told me not to worry typical mustang thing. It is kinda disheartening to hear it though. Really does sound liek something is f'ing up. Way to go Ford

I've had the same noise with my '04 since day one. Ford told me the same thing, that it's just "normal" drive train slack.

My '03 does it too, especially when i first come to a stop, then push in the clutch and put it in gear. But if I am accelerating and push in the clutch as i take my foot off the gas, it does it too.

Drivetrain slack/slop, I've got it too. Don't know exactly where it comes from though.

I think we all have it. I wish someone would come up with a fix seems like a good business opportunity for someone / company

My 00' stang does it and so does my 99' F150 (5speed). They both have 3.73's and I have the same clunk in both.

Where can the clunk come from? I can't think of anything that can be THAT loose without destroying itself in short order. The gears in the transmission and differential have to be meshing tightly, or they would probably chew each other apart.

I know what you mean, this has been discussed for years with no answer as to what causes it or how to remedy. THERE MUST BE AN ANSWER!

Mine made that clunk pretty bad, but I could feel it in the floor board. If you can feel it just under your feet check the bolts in the tranny mount. It turns out I had 1 very loose. I tightened it up and the clunk was gone.
