I have a 95 GT with a 5 speed that will not start. It turns over but wont fire.

About 5 months ago I replaced the intake manifold with GT 40p. I broke the two front bolts off into the heads. Drilled them out. I could not tap them so I just put it back together without them in. Obviously car ran like crap but it did start. I went back and put 2 longer bolts in the front holes and welded nuts on the under side of the head so I could tighten the bolts. replaced all gaskets, and put everything back together. I deleted the EGR, and smog system, sealed off all holes went to start the car and it would not start. I replaced the distributor and nothing. Tested coil, module all test good. I hear the fuel pump prime and I can smell fuel from the motor after I crank it. I know the time is not the issue because I set TDC with the head off besides if it were timing it would at least kick or do something. There was one broken wire on the ignition coil harness but I spliced it back. The only thing that happens is after cranking it for a 5-10 seconds, I get a big explosion. At this time I am thinking it is the PCM but does anyone have any ideas before I give up and take it to the shop? I know this is a difficult problem and it could be 1 of a million things but I have tried everything I can think of.

Thank you

It sounds like your base timing is way off to me. You still get a backfire after it loads up on fuel, so it still has spark. Do you have anyone who could crank it for you, while you turn the distributor enough to get it started. Once it's running then you can set the base timing to anywhere from 10-16° BTDC and tighten down the distributor bolt. Make sure the spout is pulled when setting the base timing, or it's going to be dancing all over the place.

I had a similar problem. Finally figured out that i had spark and fuel. I stabbed and restabbed the dizzy....finally got it to start. While cranking (or have someone crank it), check the timing. That way you'll know its right. Spout out as Matt said above.

Maybe your dizzy is on the exhaust stroke and not the compression stroke. Pull the dizzy out and crank it around 1 time and restab.

A big explosion is almost certainly timing 180'd out. I've seen it many times.
