Traction-loc rebuild kits go for about $50 or so. Rebuild it, it will be fine.

To me, open diff connotates a rear end with no limited slip provision. Yours is worn out, but not open.

A search will reveal tips people like to do like using an extra plate, etc.

Good luck.

Open it up, it will have clutches and plates behind the spider gears and a S spring between them through the pinion shaft.

You can post your driver's door tag's axle code here, or crawl underneath and see if your ratio number (i.e 3.08:1) is listed as 3L08 for locking or 308 for open.

A rear axle code of Z indicates a 3.08:1 Traction Lok rear.

rebuilding

Is the rebuild a pretty straight forward job??

I know that installing gears is best to leave to the pros.

It is not bad because you don't have to touch the pinion gear, just put it back together with the spacers that come out. You can add extra clutches to make it lock up tighter. Have a look at the October Mustang Monthly to give you an idea as to what is involeved in removing and installing the Traction Lok
