I need help on wiring up my stock gauge with my new one wire alternator once I get it so I have no problems. The one wire is a GM modded to fit Ford that puts out 135amps and is self exciting so you only run one wire to the solenoid. I have that done, but I want my stock gauge to work. There are 2 wires in the wiring harness from the gauge. One is red with an orange stripe, and one is yellow with a green stripe. I need to know which one goes where. Can I put both on the pos. side of the solenoid? Should I leave one unhooked? This is in an 84 Capri RS but is the same as all early mustangs with external voltage regs, but thats all gone now with the one wire. Anybody have a clue. All help is appreciated. Thanks :flag:

Only thing is, the stock wiring is gone for like the black orange wire, so where would I wire the yellow green wire to? The red orange one should be hooked to positive side of solenoid with a fusible link according to my book. Anybody? Please!

Actually, according to this diagram, the 85 5.0 one, it looks like I can post both of them onto the pos. side of the solenoid as long as I have fusible link after them and before the solenoid. Is this right?

Autozone has got to have the best sight for install information....... :nice: :p :hail2: :worship:
if I did not need to get up in 4 hours for work I would be filling my head with all sorts of valuable information and great pictures. Fantastic site...... I wish I knew about it before I tore my car apart.......Putting it back together would be going alot easier if I used some of their procedures, but this is going to help me a lot in the future. t is my newest desktop shortcut to add to the many other good tech sites. Great......I am grateful to learn of their site.

Yeah, I work there and didnt even know they had all that on their site. Now when a customer asks Ill be able to tell them about it. This new alternator should help out alot with previous wiring and charging problems. Thats the main reason I went with it. Anybody else have an opinion on both those wires coming together? Im gonna wire it that way today and put the alternator on hopefully tommorrow when I get it.

I got the alternator today and got the bracket modded to fit. Its originally a gm alternator with a spacer for the bottom bracket to fit. Didnt take much with the dremel to fit. Now I just need to change pullies at work and put it on there and test it. So if anyone is looking into gettin a one wire alternator, you can just run a one wire gm alt. and run a spacer. This is how alterstart on ebay sells them

I have a 85gt stang with a 5.0. I am also intrested in a new alt. Something in the 105-140 range. I would buy but im alittle worried about the wiring. Im not sure if I have a ext or int regulator. How can I tell? What to look for? And you talk about a 1 wire hookup. Im alittle confussed how it an go from a multi wire setup to a 1 wire setup. Thamks for the help. Later.

Do you have a little metal box over on the firewall by the battery? Thats the votage reg. under the starter solenoid. If you dont have that, then there should be a plugin on the alternator, but I dont think any came with internal. Basicall all you have to do to run a gm one wire, is get a spacer made, shave a little metal off the top of the mounting bracket to get it to sit high enough to put the bottom bolt in as the case is a little bigger. Im putting mine on tommorrow as I just got my pulley on and it looks like its gonna line up pretty easy as I compared it to the stock alt. All you have to do for the wiring is run a 4 gauge wire from the back of the alternator to the positive side of the solenoid and if you want a gauge, find the gauge wires which should be the yellow/green and the red/orange wires and put them together and hook a fusible link to it and put it on the positive side of the solenoid too. Thats all you have to do and you can get rid of all the stock wiring for the charging system according to what Ive read. Im gonna try it out tommorrow after I get off work. Ill let you know how it turns out.
