only spinning one tire sometimes?

Hi all,

I have had my 04 Gt coupe (with auto trans) for 2 weeks now.
I have a limited understanding of t-loks and my rear end. On the way home the day I bought it, it was raining and the car was fishtailing with both tires spinning (even with trac control on). Anyway, the other night I attempted to spin the tires on dry pavement in a straight line and only the right one spun. I know that this would mean clutches in the carrier, but the car has only 29k on it and was owned by an adult female and was BONE stock so I don't see that it would have been beat on.

My questions therefore are
1-under norman driving is my "full power/torque" being transfered to the wheels?
2- is it possible depending on conditions to have one vs. both spinning?
3-is there anything I can do to get them both going? Searching here has given me 2 possibilities, turn the wheel a bit instead of a straingt line or back up a little first drop it into D and mash the gas..

Any help would be appreciated since I am really hoping I do not need to take care of this before I can get an exhaust (which i am still deciding on)

THANKS

Its possible the clutch plates are worn. I remember reading in 5.0(I think) that they said 30K on the T-lok was average for acting as a open diff. I didn't experience this with my 01 auto before I replaced my clutch pack when I did gears. Who knows...maybe she was a burnout kindof gal...
But yeah your gettin power to both wheels unless one breaks away. T-lok rebuild kit is like 40 or so $$.

My 04 with 43K on it sometimes likes to spin the RR tire when it's cold. However, after I get off of the highway and I take off making a right hand turn, it no longer does it.

Remember that a limited slip is just that, it isn't a spool. Under a WOT and a hard right, it will spin the RR tire and glaze the clutches and or steels. Do it a few times and when you are on level ground, it now starts to act more and more like an open.

You can either upgrade to a carbon rebuild kit or but a stock fiber kit and add an extra fiber from your old set up to it. A light scuffing of the old fiber will help to break the glaze.

my car does the same thing as the original posters, i have to get it fixed also. i can only do donuts turning left

dont get that rebuild kit, get the ones with carbon discs, its what 03 04 cobras have and supposedly are more durable

Putting it into reverse then going into driv and flooring it....dont want your drivetrain to last long do you. Has the car ever had a rear end service? I would do that...fill it with 75w140 synthetic fluid and TWO bottles of friction modifier. Then see if that helps. if it doesnt either get a traclok rebuild or a new trac lok diff assy...you can get them for 225 bucks and up.

Yeah, I was not reccomending a brand, but just wanting him to get the picture of what I was saying.
I agree with you on the carbon discs :nice:

Thanks everyone for the advice. I too assumed that a rebuild / replacement would be needed. However, yesterday (after chasing a mouse around my garage for a couple of hours--with no luck in getting the SOB ) I decided to do some "testing" with the car.
If taking a turn or just after a turn, only the RR spins. I have found that if I am going straight, stop, and floor it, both with chirp / spin a bit. If I want to actually do a burnout, then I have to powerbrake it, let them start, but let off the brake a little to get the passenger rear to "engage" then reapply the brake to stay and spin. It basically works best like this on an even straight away.
My very good mechanic friend said that basically makes sense b/c the limited slip won't engage in or out of turns and the right rear is the drive wheel so it wants to spin first by default.
For now, I am going to take this as the way it is b/c I don't NEED to be spinning the tires nor do I want to need new tires before I even get an exhaust.

Thanks again for all the help and advice.
