I am going to be opening up the rear this weekend and I need to find out how many splines are there and also what gears are there so I know if I need to replace them or not. Can someone tell me (a rookie) what to look for or how to tell what gears and gear ratio it is so I can figure out if they are usable? This car used to be dragged and that is all the info I got. I need to check out the gears and make sure they work before I get the entire thing together and realized it drives like crap. The car is a 67 fastback and I will be running the 390 which is what came with it originally. Thanks guys.

The pinion is the small gear that mates with the bigger, ring gear. As Krash says, count the teeth on both and take the smaller number, the pinion gear and divide it into the number of teeth on the ring gear. It'll be obvious when you pull the diff. The pinion gear is buried in the nose of the diff and has very beveled, and long, teeth.
