I wouldn't expect to see any difference by switching coils. I switched my stock one out for an Accel high output TFI coil. Afterwards the car idled kinda rough and had a slight miss to it. I swapped it out for a $16 wells OEM replacement and the car ran fine again. It is my understanding from reading alot of info on here and other sites that our stock ignition sytems are actually pretty good.

you may want to upgrade your wires to like ford motor sports 9 mm wires. and a fresh set of plugs i think the gap is .54. but don't hold that gap spec like its written in stone.
and i wounldn't recommend summit crane coil. you don't get whats pictured. it like some cheap ass coil you buy at any joe smoe parts shop.

Big J. (The Shape), thanks for the info. i had been contemplating swapping in a new coil (stock ignition, mostly stock motor), due to the fact that the coil is 15 years and 155K old (i knew better than to expect performance difference, but wanted to freshen it up).
i had been considering the Accel or Mallory, but did not know that you had problems (i have read of others having problems, but did not know the poster(s) real well, so i wrote it off).

hmm, might just run one of the oem parts store ones, and keep the stocker in the trunk in case the parts store one dies.

stock Thick FIlm ignition: it is a remarkably good oem ignition in my experience. it allows quite a wide plug gap, even compared to many CDI (coil pack for each cylinder) ignitions. for most N/A applications, it is just fine (with forced induction, etc, it is nice to upgrade to keep from having to close the gap too much). plus the ancillary benefits of a box (multiple spark, rev limiter, and so on).

good stuff. wonder if anyone has done a poll on what brand of coils have been problematic.

well, motorsport wires are crap, but that's a seperate post in itself. Accel makes good wires, the 300+, I like them, and they have a lifetime warranty, so I got two sets for the price of one, so far. Accel also makes a nice coil, I put one in my car and the top end picked up a bit, not much but a bit. as far as computers go, stay far away from Accel, they can't make management programs, get an MSD box, but make sure you run spiral-core wires, otherwise you fry the box within a short amt of time.

hope this helps!
