If you dont want a civic, I'd suggest an early 90's Accord. I had a '92 with a 5-speed and the 2.2L and it went to 520,000km without missing a beat, sold it for scrap because the clutch wore out and we didnt want to put in the money. The car had little rust, the bad spot is in the rear quarter right above the rear bumper but theres no hidden spots. The car also got like 38mpg combined driving, 42 highway. Plus it actually drove and handled really well, quite neutral and feels like a light car. The upside to this, you get a Honda for reliability/fuel consumption but its not a civic and doesnt have a V-tec motor so nobody wants to steal it!

I was looking for one of those myself, then I just found out that the 90-93 Accord is the second most stolen car next to the Civic. They may not hav Vtec, but theives want them for some reason.

im thinking ford ranger 2.3 or 2.5 5 speed. put a 2.73 rear end in it. and probably idle at 65mph = 30+ mpg easy
not to mention they are like 2500 for clean 96+ with low miles and no one will steal it

as stated before, a 4 cyl ranger cant get out of its own way, nevermind with a 2.73 rear. a stock 5.0 does mid 14's with that gear, imagine less than half that power turning the same gears. forget ever carrying any sort of weight in the back

if you dont mind being that slow, with low 20's gas mileage on average and need the utility of a truck then go for it. if you want some comfort and a little fun to drive factor, find a car. if the utility of a truck is the important thing, get a real truck at least a 4.0 V6 ranger. 17-18mpg but decent power

I had a 4.0 SOHC Ranger King Cab 4x4 and loved it. 5 speed auto was great and the 4.10s made it move. It got 18 mpg ALL CITY driving.
I had a 3.0 Ranger King cab and it was allright. It got 22 mpg and would do 90 on the freeway.
I had a 5 speed bare bones 4-cyl 97 Ranger. I was passed by a three cylinder Metro
I wanted to kill that truck.... so I did

what was the mpg in your ranger 4popper....and was it auto^^^???

i dont want a v6 truck sine i know my arse will ony get like 12-15mpg tops.
although i might consider the v6...

i test drove my buddys 4pooper 5speed pos ranger and was laughing how good it ran, it was just as fast as my civic up to about 40 an from there it wasnt any worse than any eco box 4 banger..... it did remind me of being in my miata with no way to set the seat back though i think

i really think a i could put a little engineering into a ranger and get 30mpg city

My four banger got 19-20mpg and it was the 5speed stick. No A/C or power anything. It spun its tires realy easy but skinny tires + no tail weight + open diff = one wheel peel FTMFW!!!
But seriously, they suck. The 3.0 V-6 is way better and, for me anyway, gets better mileage.
BTW The four was bare bones, only options were carpet and cloth seats. My 3.0 was a four door xtra cab, stepside, power everything and an auto and achieved the better mileage
Seems like 4 grand would buy a 2000 ish 3.0 xtra cab

wow i cant believe that truck only got 20 without ps and a/c! wtf!???

my buddy claims 25 city and a lil over 30 highway...not cool comapred to my
30/40 that my civic gives me...

my other option is a tdi jetta for 6500 through a fmaily member its wat i was driving when i was waiting on parts and etc for my civic......
it gets 40-all the way to 60mpg!!!! its an awesome deal but way out my budget, the car is worth more than that easily as vw will give him 8k on a trade in!!!!!!!!!1
i just figured i would get something a lil more beater for college, i have a nice stang that is going to be really nice with paint and rims.....

always loved 240sx's
and have always like the eclipse like the 97-99 (aka the girly one )

The Eclipse didnt become a girly car till 2000.... unless you got the Spyder
An early GST could be had cheaply but dont get the AWD as a budget cruiser. To heavy and break easily and will lower the mileage.

Time frame is not a good measurment of mileage unless you could tell us how many miles per day you drive

a 4 cyl fox is only good for around 18-20 in town and 26-28 on the hgwy. that cant even compete with an older honda or some of the other econo cars that are seeing 35+ on the hwy and close to 30 in town.

christ on a stick! if I only had to go ten miles a day I 'd break out the 10 speed.
I hate driving my vert in town. especially if it's over 80* outside. sitting in traffic with the sun baking down on you sux big hairy ones.

I drive the hell out of my ranger which is a 96 OHV 4.0 5-speed 4x4 supercab with 3.73's and i get 18

my friend has a 2003 regular cab 4x4 3.0 5-speed and he gets 23

the 4cyl has to work too hard and has steep gears to make it move which kills the economy

Do you need a pickup truck? If not, why get one? My brother had a 4.0 reg cab short box 4wd ranger with a 5-speed. He bought it thinking good gas mileage and that he would have a truck. Well it got ok gas mileage and he never used the truck feature of it. He got rid of it after a short time...

If I were in your shoes I would not be looking at a truck unless you NEED it. Low to mid 20 mpg sucks, my 5.0 would do that on my commute to work. Even when I get 28-30 in my Audi I wish I could get more.

I think for someone whose worried about crime, doesnt need a truck, and wants good mileage and cheap you can't go wrong with a crappy 4 cyl car. I know being young you want fun to drive, good looking etc... but think about the money saved getting 40 mpg, paying nothing to insure it and buying it for $500.

Now remember your hearing this from someone with an AWD A4 that gets 28-30 on the highway and an F250 V10 thats gets 10-11 on the highway.

I thought that as well, and now I have a 3/4 ton yard ornament that I use to move the boat, and my dad uses for his enclosed trailer. Also remember, being the truck guy sucks... everyone asks for your help ALL the time, and NEVER pay you back.

Also you don't need a car to snag women, everyone knows that. Not to mention those arent the girls you want anyways. My GFs buying a brand new Mercedes real soon, and Im gonna love her having a nicer car than me . More excuse to use hers than mine.
