OT--94 Explorer

Any mechanics here? I have a 94 Ford Exploderand my brake lights are no working. The Tail lights work fine but the Brake lights do not come on at all! Also, my ABS light is on also...would this cause the ABS light to come on? Would a blown bulb cause all the brake light not to work as well as the ABS light to come on? Need to get this squared away so i don't cause an accident or get a ticket. Thanks alot for the help!

I also have a 94 Explorer but I've never had that problem. I'd check the fuses first, then check the switch on the brake pedal. I know if one blinker goes out then the turn signals wont flash, but I dont think that happens with brake lights.

The ABS light could also be a fuse. If not, it's probably a wheel speed sensor.

That is very strange. Well, here is what to look at first.

Check the bulbs. I think they are dual stage bulbs. They should have two fillaments in each bulb. Check to see if either of the coils are broken. If they are, replace the bulb and see what happens.

On our mustangs, there is an ABS tester on the driver's side engine compartment. You should be able to run the test to verify that the abs system is working. Get a chilton/haynes manual for the car and run the procedure. It should also give you more information on the ABS light.

Also, there has to be some sort of relay that tells the brake lights to come on/off when you push the pedal. Look in the manual, and trace the wiring to this relay. If it went bad, that would explain the lights not coming on.

You can have someone hold the brake while you hold a multimeter to the two terminals for the "brake lights". If you aren't getting current, you have some form of an electrical problem (i.e. relay, broken wire, etc). BTW, you should see current at the two terminals for the "running lights", since they are working.

my brake lights stoped working on the stang and a wire had come lose on the brake pedle switch check that first...but with the ABS on i would say it's probly a relay or somthing.

If the brakes are failing, give it to a relative to drive, such as a father in law or so!

Ex---yeah i think i'll let him drive it down the raod here where it's down hill, twisty, and the tree's a tightly along the road with no shoulder. I should maybe ask him to put me in his will first!
