Ouch violent shaking and ratling

Ok 40% of the time I shift into 5th it grinds. Especially if I am getting on it a litle but. Well the other day I was on the highway doing something I know I shouldn't have been but tere was this WRX STI trying to race me so I thought I would let him know what my lil car could do. I had him by a car and a half at 120mph but 5th gear started grinding real bad and then even when I put it in neautral it was still vioently shaking and going haywire. The car still drive fine and I tried again to take her up but agian at about 120 its shakes and grinds. Any suggestions? What the heck is wrong?

could be your trans is headed south but then again don't overlook the driveshaft or rearend.

I had the same problem at 100 with my stock 3.08 gears, but when i put in my 3.73's it came down to 75 or so...but you already have an aluminum driveshaft, which fixed my problem.

Well here's a little more info, the trans was suposedly rebulit about 8,000 miles ago. Now I have only put about 1,500 on it. I guess I am to trusting with people. COuld it be like a syncro or something?

is it grinding when your trying to put in 5th gear or is it grinding when it's in 5th gear?
more than likely your 5th gear syncro is bad. even thou its rare that it happens, since 5 th gear is the least gear used. but any way, theres a problem and your should get it check out, and fixed. before it turns into a bigger problem. and you may want to check your balancer while your at it. don't want your tranny and engine going out on you.

It grinds when going into 5th then past 120 feels like the trans is gonna fall the hell out Guess before I get shocked at a shop any clue on the price figure for a bad syncro getting fixed?
