Overheating Question

I have replaced my radiator, thermostat, water pump, electronic coolant sensor and have put in new head gaskets. I am still overheating but it is intermittent and never while i am driving on the highway. My fan is working properly and switches to a faster speed when i turn on my AC. The only thing i can think of is maybe my fan is shutting off sometimes when it shouldn't....which would make sense with this intermittent problem>???? Anyone have any suggestions?

Toss a manual fan switch or two in, so you know the fan is staying on, and see how it does.
Did you go with a larger radiator when you replaced it?

Ok, i can try a manual fan switch tomorrow. No i didnt get a better radiator...i got a brand new OE for $100. I plan on selling the car as soon as i get this overheating problem fixed, otherwise i would have got a aftermarket radiator. Any other suggestions?

I dont know what the temps are....all i know is what i see on the gauge and see under the hood. The needle will go all the way up in the red on the gauge, way to the right of the word "normal". Ofcourse i will pull over imeadiately and wait for it to cool down. Now once it cools for a bit and i take off, sometimes i can go for ever and the needle will be at the "R" on the gauge and other times i will over heat right away.

the stock guage sucks, you might not be over heating at all. Make sure the guage is grounded well b/c mine was reading high at one point but it was giving a false reading.

I would make sure the fan is working properly. I replaced my whole fan assembly and still was overheating. Turns out fan connecter went bad and I had to hit up the junk yard and replace it..
Watch out for bad thermostats too, I have had one or two bad thermostats from autozone. I have the OE radiator in 90 degree + hot humid weather and it seems to cool good enough. From my experience with the stock thermostat everytime it said I was overheating I was

While talking stats, I am a big fan of Mr Gasket units. They are balanced, flow better, opens fully sooner, etc.
All for a couple extra bucks over the stuff from parts stores.

make sure the radiator cap is good, holding the required pressure.. thats what was wrong with my car

I am overheating for sure. When i popped the hood yesterday their was antifreeze all over my engine and it was bubbling and steaming out of the resivour tank.

I have done this also, i got a brand new radiator cap and had the system pressure tested. Everything seems to be fine their.

I'm going to get the fan checked out today. I got a brand new thermostat but i suppose i can buy another one just to play safe. It's really hard to fix a intermittent problem!

When you changed all this stuff did you flush the system out? I was AMAZED at the accumulated crap my engine had in it when I did this. I had the WP off so I jsut ran the hose through the passages...

well thats a pretty good sign then. sure the T-Stat was not put in backwards?

Yes i did have the system flushed.

Yes im sure it wasnt put in backwards. It doesnt overheat all the time, just sometimes. Yesterday i was driving all morning with no problems. I drove in the afternoon for about 45 minutes untill it overheated, but before that it was at the "R" in the word normal the whole time. It just seems like something is malfunctioning and then correcting itself later.

I'm having the same problem dude. After years of replacing parts, reading forums and diagnosing... I've come to the conclusion my CCRM has gone bad. My fan turns on with my manual switch, with AC on and with defrost on. But I have *SEEN* it not come on occasionally. It's possible it's a bad/loose connection. But others have had their CCRMs go out on them too. So that's my guess.

The fan connection has a ford recall for it, as it gets burnt up. Do a search here for more info.
