P/S pump or r&p gone bad?

in my DD today all of a sudden started making some loud crazy noises when i started to turn, eventually the power steering was completely gone. I got out and check the fluid and it was ok, looked under car and no leaks at all. So im kinda stumped. It smelt really bad too. So what she i be looking at? thanks

replace it...the rack and pinions do go bad...I think the fluid passage in the rack get plugged up or something..rancho cordova has them for pretty cheap at recycle road...your pump also might be plugged up to the rack. I have had similar problems before and dont know what else to look for but now Im running flaming river manual r&p...also rebuilt r&p from local shops arent too expensive either...
