I need to know where the Canister Purge Solenoid is located. I went to Autozone and they pulled the code from my computer P1443. The troubleshooting tip was "Evaporative Emission Control System Control Value". Then I called Star Ford (Dealership) and they said it was the Canister Purge Solenoid. So I need to know where it can be found so i can change it.

He showed you the DPFE sensor...Purge one is on the other side of car... I threw 4 codes that was one... I spent too much to get it all fixed... I hate sensors... But the Purge canister should be on your passenger... It is a gray like thing in a black like wrapping... Mine was showing rust...

I have had that same code for years as well. Does it set the computer into "safe" mode at all?

VDunn:

Look on the passenger's side near the firewall. You will find a solenoid with vacuum hoses attached (inlet and outlet) and an electrical connection on the bottom. The solenoid has a black rubber sleeve on it. There should be another vacuum/electrical switch near the center of the cowl, kind of near the weatherstripping along the firewall. Follow this vac hose to the left to find the purge solenoid. (The vac outlet of the solenoid goes to the firewall switch).

Sorry for the lengthy description. I hope it helps.

if you're having idle problems and slight surging, then it's the canistor or purge valve. if you're idle is normal, then its the sensor. mine had no idle problems and it was the sensor.

Roger_4.6_96: Nobody said you were wrong. It is entirely possible that the Ford guy gave VDunn the wrong info. He's just trying to get a problem sorted out. No harm/foul intended.

VDunn:

Yes, the top pic is the solenoid and the bottom pic is the switch that the PCM controls (on/off) to make the solenoid work.

You can check the solenoid by putting a handheld vac pump on the outlet (the end towards the upper plenum/throttle body area). It must hold vacuum for more than 30 seconds. If it doesn't, replace it. If it holds vacuum, apply 12 V to the electrical connection and the solenoid should click open. With vacuum applied and then 12 V applied, the solenoid will open and the vacuum will drop to zero. If the solenoid does not work, replace it.

Hope this helps.

would the solenoid make the car run weird. The car seems to lag a take off and it virbates at the stop light. The virbation can't be from the transmission because it just has been rebuilt.

My check engine light was on for about 8 months because of P1443 before I did anything about it. I never saw any differenece at all in how the car ran during that time. I first replaced the sensor, the one in the second pic with the solid black tube connecting on one side and the black tube with red stripe connecting on the other. My check engine light stayed off for about a month then came back on. I then replaced the cannister/solenoid and havent had the code since. Heres the part #'s the sensor was like 15 bucks and the cannister was around 50.
