Paint is being annoying

Ok well I am painting some plastic pieces glossy black with my spraypaint that I found. The paint says it is glossy black and I have made it look glossy before. For some reason, this time I have put about 4 coats on and it will not dry glossy, it dries like a flat black. I am doing this in 60's degree temperature outside in the furnace closet. Does anybody have any ideas to what could be the prob?

Perhaps the texture of the pieces you are trying to paint or even the lack of primer before hand? Some light sanding between coats and reapplication of the paint might get you what you're looking for.

Also.... what do you mean by "spraypaint that I found"? That's sounds ominous.

lol I had it laying in the shed, its not old at all. Wouldnt the 4 previous coats also help as a sort of primer lol? If I clearcoat it then it would look terrible wouldnt it?

If you've got 4 coats on it already then sanding is what you need to do... for example:

This part was a used part that I bought from someone here on SN. After I stripped off the old (and butchered) paint on the throttle body spacer, it was time to spruce up the open pour aluminum a bit. Primer, light sanding, more primer, light sanding, and roughly 4 coats of high heat metallic blue with light sanding between coats. Note the reflection and that there is no clear coat on that spacer.

Sanding between coats gets rid of all the divots and stuff, making for a smooth, flat, shiney surface.

#1 dont spray paint near your furnace! the overspray and fumes and all that other bs that floats around is very flammable!

#2 if its paint that you just found, it is probably old and way past its shelf life. get 5$ and go buy a new can and youll have your shiny black paint again.

Sometimes high humidity will make paint blush, and it will not be glossy. Either too much paint or too far from the can will make a difference.

I have, after playing around with both kinds, ended up using gloss black to paint the flat black trim items on the Mustangs and Capri. Mostly with Krylon, and it does not look very shiny on plastic trim. On steel, it wll look shinier.

Try it on some different items.
