if i were to take my car to get professionaly painted, with a color change from black to sonic blue, i would like them to do the engine bay, and do minor body work. now i have been hearing estimates anywhere from $3000-$6000. whats the difference between them? i know you guys are going to say the 3k isnt as good as the 6k but what does the 6k paint job do that the 3k paint job dosent? what do you guys think i would be best off doing?

For a complete color change including the engine bay and all the jamb's expect to spend at LEAST 3k for a decent job. The main thing is the prep work. thats where a majority of the cost is. And prep work is KEY. W/ cheap prep work, the final result will be crappy. You can save some money by doing whatever disassembly you can so when the body guys go to work, its less they have to do.
the car needs to be striped down, then jams and engine bay painted then half way reassembled and the body painted. Its all about the hours of work stripping it down and making sure any areas with rust are addressed. I have a car Im doing this to right now and it looks like its going to run about 4k or so. NOw you can always go to Maaco like mustangirley69 and get a 350$ paint job but you know , you get what you pay for.
If you you prep the car, and tow it there, they might be willling to work with you on the price
Are you going to let them pull the engine out?? Or are you going to give them the car sans drivetrain?

I do bodywork for a living and do complete paint jobs. We just painted a 71 Plymouth GTX and between myself and another guy we had 20 hours in blocking for paint alone on the body, not including the doors, hood, fenders and trunk lid. I did a rough estimate with my boss and the prep and paint work alone comes to about $5500. This is at a labor rate of $65. Thats not even including the amount of work we have into getting everything straight. The total paint job and body work will probably come to 15,000 including the extensive amount of body work that was done. All I have to say is you get what you pay for. The $3000 job is probably going to be a quick sand and spray, nothing ridiculous. Where the $6000 job is probably going to be a really nice paint job with alot of work put forth to make it straight and really nice for you. Do most of the work yourself, such as taking the handles out, door locks, moldings, quarter windows, bumpers, doors, fenders, trunk lid, hood etc and the cost of the job will drastically drop. A color change is a very in depth job and requires a ton of work. It's up to how you want your car to look.
