Is there a primer or something you should use on PVC before you paint it?

And can I just use spray paint from the hardware store for the final coat?

My engine bay already looks ghetto enough, I don't want it to be a total embarassment!

cool, thanks, i'll check it out. i want something simple and unobtrusive ... either shiny black or silver

i guess the main thing is to make sure it is as clean as possible, right? is rubbing alcohol the best thing for cleaning it? what about roughing it up a little with sand paper first ... not necessary because it is not glossy?

I scuffed mine up with a scotch brite pad and used some paint reducer to wipe it down. I then painted it with some black krylon spray paint...just regular spray paint.

One thing I have noticed is were the fernco's attach...the paint is like crazy glue and makes it a PITA to get them off. mask off the mounting area before painting. I would use something to mark were things need to fit than mask it off. You can give it a little overlap so there is no white line showing. The first time I made one I screwed up the paint the next time I tried taking off the fernco to adjust it. I had to strip and re-paint it.

Duplicolor makes an etching primer that I would use. (I use it for all sorts of stuff like this, so it isn't bad to have a can of it around.) Clean with soap and water, laquer thinner, brake cleaner or even mineral spirits. Scotchbrite pad the whole thing, that would be good.

The Krylon that Adam mentioned is designed for plastic. No sanding necessary. (Cleaning is ALWAYS necessary, though.)

Regular paint would probably do ok. For "general purpose" stuff, I use the cheapy WalMart brand. ;)

That Stang is fianlly starting to come together for you. Now, you have to decide whether you are driving it, or the Fairlane. How tough is life? :D

good info guys ... i'll check at my home depot

and reddy ... life isn't quite that great yet ... the fairlane needs the floorboard fixed and new carpet, seats and weatherstripping, and the stang has a coolant leak from the sway bar hitting the oil pan, so i still don't really WANT to drive either right now ... :bang:

i think it needs a couple of coats of clear coat ...
