Pancakes and Smoke.

Hello all,
While driving around tonight with the 87 gt, began to smell some very delicious pancakes. While driving thinking its just some coolant spillover, I decide not to stop. Get home, and let her idle before shutting her off and huge clouds of smoke come from under the hood. (white smoke) I lift up the hood while the car still running and still smoking, and i assume the worse electrical fire. The smoke was coming from the top left side of the engine bay when looking at it. There was no sparks or flames, no electrical fire like i thought, just alot of smoke coming from that area.

Still smells like pancakes, so I'm letting it sit until tomm.

Any suggestions what it could be, car isnt dripping on driveway..

did you lose a coolant hose or heater core, that leaked down on the exhaust? I don't know screw it I am hungry for pancakes now......later

Yep. Sounds like you have a leaking heater core hose, or a coolant leak in that area.

Some hose leaks are only apparent when the engine is revving and the coolant is under pressure. Start the motor and have someone rev it up to build up coolant pressure, while you look for spraying coolant. For safety, don't be standing real close to the engine when your assistant first opens the throttle, just in case it starts to spray coolant all over the place.

the heater core's crain is right above the passenger side exhaust pipe in the firewall. look right below the a/c stuff and you will see it. its a little rubber gromet with a rubber line coming out of it. check and see if coolant is coming out of it.

I just started the car, and like you guys said coolant is dripping onto the cat on the right side of the hpipe. I still can't see where its coming from but it definetly is coolant, im going to put the car on some ramps, and take another look in about an hour or so. Ill keep everyone updated.

I just looked and there is coolant coming out of a small hole, dripping onto the exhaust. on the backwall , no hoses or anything there just a small hole dripping coolant..

Heater cores shot, is it safe to bypass it until i get it fixed. I'm aware i would have no heat, but any damaging effects of just running the two coolant hoses to themselves.

yes just get a small hose and loop the two back steel transfer tubes together

you have got to be kidding me. its days like these i wish i was at work.

bypass it, it won't hurt anything. If you don't have a/c you can hook your heater hoses up to the ac ports located near the heater core and you will have super hot heat but will never have a/c again unless you replace some parts.

DO NOT do that. that is probably the worst advice you could ever give him. not trying to make you mad but dang man think before typing.

I'm going to try my hand at fixing it. I couldnt find any type of rubber tube that could make that bend without folding/clamming up. I have to do the steering wheel and speedo swap anyways so removing the dash might be a good thing. Also got some electrical gremlins i need to get sorted out.

Sounds like the perfect time to take the dash out and fix a few things at once. Putting in a new heater core is the way to go. Also make sure either your hose has the reducer in it, or put a 13mm 1/4 drive socket into your hose to slow down the coolant so it doesn't have too much pressure. My hose has the pressure reducer already in it.
