PCV breather filter? Where can I get one?

You know the little screen thingy down in the PCV hole? Where can I pick one up for my new Performer intake? Auto Zone didn't have one listed. Anybody?

Hate to say it.... Try the Ford dealership. I changed my stuff over on the weekend when the dealer was closed & ended up soaking mine in mineral spirits & then sprayed the heck out it with carb cleaner. Seemed to work good!

You can get one from 50 resto, I would also recomend the rubber pcv grommet as well.Breather screen

yep for all responses. if that mesh screen clogs up, it will create headaches. you can get a new mesh screen, grommet, and valve for a little over 20 bucks at the dealer. avoids problems with ill fitting pcv valves, etc.

the grommet Bernie talks about is really rubber (mine was vulcanized, like hard plastic. LOL).
do it and forget for two years.

I got mine at a Lincoln/Mercury dealer, it was like $7-12

I got mine from late model resto as well, but I was with a buddy of mine when he changed his out and we got his screen at advance auto parts. They had it hanging on the rack with the PCV valves as a matter of fact they had the grommet there as well.

AutoZone are idiots.........that's where I got mine. It's a Purolator number..... B15231 They call it a "Breather Element".

How can you tell if the screen is clogged? I had mine out and it looked like it's clogged from the factory!

i placed it in a vacuum chamber and i connected the leak down tester to it, noting the pressure differential........

ok, just kidding.
i looked at it. it looked like poo. i put some spare hose on it, and blew through the hose, noting the resistance. did the same with the new one and it had a lot less resistance.

you can probably soak it overnight in spirits, etc, and be ok. i replaced it cuz it is cheap and that way i did not have to worry about it. just me.

"....looked like poo..." -- pretty descriptive, cracked me up.

I've had pretty good luck soaking used ones overnight in carb cleaner or xylol. Use a glass jar and cover the screen completely submerging it.

Just curious what kind of problems a clogged filter could cause... I have mine apart right now and will probably just replace. That grommet seems to be a hard plastic material and the pcv valve slides out quite easily. Is it supposed to hold it in there good? Also my replacement pcv valve has a couple of tubes on it that the stock one doesn't. Will this be a problem?

If the screen is clogged, excessive crankcase pressure can build. You are right to examine the grommet. The cheap $2 pcv valves and old, brittle grommets are notoriously loose fitting - the source of vacuum leaks. Get a motorcraft pcv and new grommet from the dealer; new screen as well. Easy to extract the old one using a magnet - the screen is steel; manifold alum. Just get the magnet close and it will pull the screen right out. If the valve has other applications (multiple nipples on it) it should come with plugs for the ones you don't need. But I only use Motorcraft pcv.

im with Michael. i have used the parts store PCV valves and now run a motorcraft. the latter fits better in the grommet. do it once, do it right, and forget for a couple of years.
my two cents worth.

Where exactly is this thing? I pulled my PCV valve the other day, but I didn't see, err feel anything below it (it was all I could do to feel around and get it back into its gromett (sp)

the screen is below the grommet. if you pull the grommet, you should be able to poke a finger down and feel something impeding your sticking your finger in too far. some folks apparently have had the screens removed by a previous owner - so yours may be AWOL.

i like Michael's magnet idea - i had not thought or nor heard that before. my screen was actually 'sticky' in there - long needle nose pliers grabbed it out (there are tangs on the inside of the outer circumference to grab).

Just climb up on the intake, and get a needle nose plier, and yank it out.

Go over to the Ford Dealership for the Screen and the PCV.

Pick up the grommet over at Advance Auto.

I got PCV, Screen, and grommet at Ford for $24.00 flat.

Go there first, it is a much higher quality part than any Fram junk.
