People Who Know Transmissions Please Help!

The Car= 94 Mustang GT that was converted to Manual from AOD by a used car lot before I bought it.

Transmission went out so I ordered a 94-95 Cobra transmission from D&D performance in Wixom, MI. They swore that a 94-95 Cobra Trans would fit a completley stock 94 GT-----is that true?

Problem--The input shaft on the T5 that was in the car is much shorter than the input shaft of the 94-95 Cobra Trans that D&D sent me. The trans D&D sent me will not fit this car! I want to believe that D&D is right and have come up with a theory:

Could the dealer have used an 87-93 T5 and bellhousing when they did the swap? Do 87-93 T5's have a shorter input shaft? please help me, I am totally confused!

A Cobra trans should fit a GT, just like the older years. Click HERE to go to a page where you can enter the tag number from your tranny, to see what it came out of. I can't say for sure whether a 94 tranny's input shaft would be longer than a 93's or whatever. The bellhousing would have to be longer then too. But I know that 79-95 use the same D/S, so the whole unit has to be the same length.

94-95 Mustangs had a longer input shaft, so it is entirely possible that the one you had previously was a 93 and older model. I believe it was like 5/8 inch difference between the 93 and the 94-95

i second that, i believe ive picked up off of this site the info that 94-95 input shaft is longer than the 87-93

i wonder what other parts are different to accomodate this, maybe a deeper flywheel?

'94-'95 cars have a T45. They have an integral bellhousing. '93 & older T5 is a very different tranny. You're best bet is to call D&D and explain what you started with, what you have and what the difference is and see what should be done next to get it straightened out. This is an after the sale service thing. They told you it'd fit and you now have concerns that it won't. They should be able to make sense of it with you.

EDIT: The difference in input length is not importent because the bell housing and input length with the T45 is engineered for the application.

If the tranny that came in the car when you got it has a seperate bell housing it's a T5. If it looks like it's part of the tranny case it's a T45.

It is longer than the T5. My buddy tried to use a tranny that came out of a '94 Cobra in a '91 GT and it wouldnt work with the T5 bellhousing. He had to get the bellhousing from the '94, and it worked just fine. Good luck!

This is not true, the T45 with the integral bellhousing was not used on the 5.0L. It was designed for the 4.6L and wasn't used in the 94-95 Mustangs. The 94-95 did utilize a different T-5 and bellhousing. The five speed that was put in it probably is a 93 or older style.

I was sure it changed to T45 in '94. My bad. You are correct.

No. I don't know where people get this T-45 stuff. They were used in MODULAR cars.


With that said .... it IS possible to mate a T-45 to a 5.0. My 5.0 Ranger had one. It involves making a custom bellhousing adapter .... because no company out there sells one. It was very expensive to get made. It IS NOT worth it, IMO.
