Well i been working with my dad for 2 1/2 years. I wanna quit, but my mom says im disgraceful if i do. Honestly this job is getting old, and im sick of it. Like everyday i hate it. Sometimes i think of like falling hard and break my knee or something(I lay tile) so i can stop working and get a new job. I dont tell my dad just my mom, im scared of my dad, i have like a fear of him dont know why. So im a disgrace ful or are they just want me to stay? Should i quit? I have no life i work almost everyday, last week we worked 80 hrs. Im onlt 21, no payments to do no nothing just insurance and my phone. I dont go out cuz i always have to work the next day!!!!!!! its pissing me of!!!!!!!!!!!

You can't live your life for other people. If you do so, you will never be happy. For years I beat myself up over what my parents wanted for me. Then one day I woke up and realized that I need to choose the path for myself, not them. I was the one that needed to choose what made me happy, not them. Always consider their advice as their life experience will far exceed yours, but even parents are not the all knowing. And disgraceful, absolutely not. If you don't like it, you shouldn't continue to do it.

i agree i quit working for my dad and went for another job that payed better had was alot easier and likeable i wouldnt have made anything at my dads shop and like you said have no life i still need to get some more friends but its getting there. in school i came home early to work and worked harder and longer than most people i knew and didnt get to go do anything with my friends. i would say go get another job and hope they dont kick you out of the house. what kind of job do you think you would like?

yup, its easy for us to say quit, because its not our dad, BUT you know you have to, or you wouldent have posted this thread.

You really gotta tell him the truth.

Also, if you keep doing that, your body is going to hate you later in life, that kind of work totally wrecks your knees.

I agree with some of the replies (especially the above-sentiments from GMGT). Family is family, and if you live with your folks, things could get crappy fast.

I completely agree that you need to chat with your Pops before this festers anymore. If you don't, you might get fed-up and quit, and peoples' feelings will be hurt from the act (things might get heated and emotional-walls might go up). Get an open, easy-going line of communication going NOW. Have your Mom sit down with you and your Pops (she will be the one talking to him after you are done talking and you want her to be able to speak on your behalf later). Tell them how you feel and that you're burning out. He won't want to lose you, so he very well might cut your hours back or even give you some time off so you don't burn-out (literally - it's hot out, and figuratively).

You have to get a dialog going and do it soon. Your Pops should have nothing but respect for your doing so (he might seem disappointed or hurt at first, but a lot less so than if you can't take it anymore and have to quit or you get irritated and start getting mad).

Just MHO bud. Best of luck with the decision.

I still stand by my original comments, but I do think that Hissin's approach is a good one. Don't just go tell them **** You! A dipolomatic approach as mentioned by the pervious two posters is a good idea.

First off, I WISH I was in a position to make money and not spend it! Geez!!! Save some!! Put it away and never think about it again. It'll turn into a huge pile, even in a "safe" investment. Maybe you can retire well before your friends, that way.

As far as the job. Face your dad. With respect. Man to man. He may be upset about losing a good worker, but he'll be proud that he raised a good son, and a man. Brings a tear to my eye. (lol!) I have a 10 year old son and just told somebody the other day that MY crowning moment will be when he stands up and tells me what he wants and how it's going to be. Go for what you want. You're 21, how could you know what that is? Go find it. Get into the habit of squirreling money now, though! I can't say that enough. I wish I had. Good luck! Rob

Kinda funny man.....I lay tile too but I am taking criminal justice classes online so I can get my AS. I planning on being a police officer too. Tile work is hard on your body and I would suggest if you have any amount of smarts to go back to school and get a degree in something. Keep doing the tile thing if it pays well just so you can save up some more money. Start applying to different police departments and see what comes out of it. Good luck man. I know you can stand doing the tile thing a bit longer. I have and I am 28. You have plenty of time to be a cop!

Guero........let me throw my 2 cents at ya.......I agree with most of the above but what I want to say is this........you can tell your dad the truth.......let him know what family means to you but as a young man making his mark in the world that you want to stand on your own and prove yourself.........a father can't blame his son for this and will respect that you want to carve your own way.......BTW......don't come to Ohio........lol

Screw it all, break a leg. Just so you know, my dad told me I was an idiot for going to college to get an ART degree. I graduated in 4 years, have had many successful jobs since college, and my dad has never been so proud of me.

I was just in Ohio. Elyria (if anyone knows where that is).

Nicer places in OH than I thought. With all the factories and buildings I saw throughout Cleveland, I'd guess there are plenty of jobs there.

BTW, I agree with most of the above comments.
