Petronix ignition installed, running good

Just installed a petronix ignitor. Ran a seperate wire from ignition to the module. Easy installation and car is running great. Hardest part was splicing in a new wire befor the ballast resistor wire to get the 12v need for the module. Of course now the heater core is leaking....always something.....

You don't need to bypass the balast resistor...Mine ran great for years like that.

With Pertronix I you don't. Their techs say you do for the newer Pertronix II.

I agree. I just helped a freind install his Pertronix II and even though I measured 12V at the coil prior to bypassing the pink wire, the car would barely start. Spliced into the wire at the back of the ignition switch and not only did it fire right up, but it idled better. I don't have a clue why, but it did.

I had read some bad stories about using the ignitor with lower than 12 volts. I figured if the book said 12 volts that's what I was going to do. The car runs much better with the ignitor..peace..

Can you plz provide me with some pictures I am trying to do this to but i Dont have any clue about what you guys are talking about. I am a visual learner lol. If any one has pictures of this install It would be greatly apreciated.

Good luck with the P-nix, I always had poor luck with mine. Hope it continues to run well for you

Mine did not work well when it was powered through the resistor wire. With a full, constant 12 volts it works fine.

The resistor wire will read 12 volts untill you start the car and get some current through it to warm it up. Then it will drop to around 8.5 volts which is not enough for the Pertronix to work well. Mine's been working flawlessly for about three years now.

What I did is remove the instrument panel and find the back of the ignition. There you see I believe is a red and green wire going into a pink wire. The pink wire is the actual resistor DONT CUT THE PINK WIRE. Which ever wire goes into the pink one is the one you want to splice into. It is a bad area to work not much wire between the ignition switch and the pink wire. Run that new wire down by the distributor(through the firewall) and that is what the red wire from the petronix will splice into. Black wire goes to the coil.

Another option is with igntion on, car running there is a stud on the back of the ignition. I have read you can tap into this for another 12 volt power source. But I would make sure that this stud on the back of the igniton switch is only putting out 12 volts with the car running. You don't always want 12 volts going to the petronix module if the car is not running.

The hardest part is splicing a new wire in. You dont have much room. Now this is the way I did it and so far no problems. If you follow the instructions they pretty much say the same thing. Sorry I don't have any pics.

You did it the same way I did. You can't use the stud because it is not a switched source so the car won't shut down.
