Phenolic spacer and EGR problem

Today's dilemma is..

I had to go with taller valve covers to clear my 1.7s and in-turn requires me to buy a 3/8" phenolic spacer for more EGR clearance. But, I know as soon as I go and reinstall the EGR, the tube is going to be too short.

I live in California so EGR block plates are not an option.

Any suggestions? Part numbers? Thanks.

I had the same problem as you. I just blocked my EGR, but since that isn't an option for you, you'll probably have to lengthen the EGR tube. Shouldn't be too hard to do even if you can't weld it; I'd say cut the tube, buy a slightly larger piece of steel or copper tubing the lenght you need, slide it over the cut tube, maybe use some exhaust gasket maker, and clamp it down.

I think 5.0resto has a peice that goes on the threads and has the same threads on the other end that makes up for the diff. in height.

I had a similar problem with my car, i was told to cut it and extend it. Bad IDEA. i need to get this thing welded, or something. People said to use hose to extend it but the damn exhaust is too hot and melts through it like every freakin week.

This part from 50resto.com looks like it might work. Anybody else try something like this?

it may not be tall enough (if you have a large spacer) and you may need two of the adapters to get more height. This may make your tube alittle off (as its on an angle slightly) so you may have to bend your tube just alittle. Prob. the best sealing way to do this IMHO.

Well, the whole situation looks like this..

I had to move the oil filler tube to the driver's side and in doing so, the DS valve cover clears no problem. The intake EGR bracket on the PS just barely touches the valve cover. I haven't inserted a feeler gauge to know exactly how much, but I think 3/8" is probably high enough.

never heard of anybody having to do that I have the 1 inch spacer on my TFS intake and that cleared the egr just fine. I have teh 50resto adapter which i coudl really stand to have 2 on there but i make it work with just the one and thats not bending the brand new egr pipe i got from ford

Fwiw...

Personally never needed to do it, but some have taken a lenght of 3/4" copper tubing...bend it to fit. Cut the nuts off you old tubes and place em on the copper...use a flairing tool to do up the ends...

Just get some silicone hose, some clamps & connect the two together.
