PI headswap first start....BIG PROBLEM HELP!!

ok guys i looked under the car and here is what I have come up with..I am missing the small plug on the back side of the driver side head...Also i noticed there is oil leaking from the passenger side of the block too...but not in the back more toward the front and I am also seeing water coming from some where too...all hoses are checked and accounted for...WHat the **** is up with this??? Could the gaskets not be sealing? what the hell it doesnt look like the valve covers tho because its not that high up..

Who did your install? If the head wasnt on the block right, I dont think the thing would even start...Try to solve one problem at a time here. Is it water/coolant and oil that is coming out of the car or what? Concentrate on the oil leak first, get a new set of plugs and install them in the head, if you can reach from under the car. After that, start checking everything else for the coolant leak, but that should be easy to diagnose where it is coming from. You did get new head gaskets/head bolts correct? Cause you cant reuse the old ones... The bolts actually stretch when you toque them all the way down, so if you try to reuse them, they will be too long

ok i have the intake manifold off and the valve covers and the oil that is in the heads still is mixed with WATER! So now im starting to get alittle worried as to what the hell happened. Could ford have sold me the wrong head gaskets? or what the hell could be wrong I know im missing the little plug in the back of the driver head but theres alot more wrong here and I need all the help i can get..

I did the install very very slowly and took my time doing everything...I found out that the head always looks like that i was just freaking out. Its hard to solve one problem at a time because the car leaked OIL and WATER too..not just oil like i said before...i am about to remove the heads either tonight or in the morning because there ready to ocme off yet again. Yes I got the bolts and head gaskets too because i got the ford head changing kit. But I have found out that somewhere OIL and WATER have mixed together and made cloud **** in my heads. SO I am thinking its a head gasket maybe they didnt give my the right ones??? :shrug: because both side are doing this one in the back and the other in the front so I dont know we'll find out soon tho..thanks guys.

Good luck, get the head chaning kit from steeda or something, then you know its the right one. And when you have the heads off get that plug situation taken care of. Too bad you have to take it all apart again. It should be easy the second time around though now that you know where everything goes.

ok guys i have the heads off the car and it record time for me (5 hours without a break) I have found that there is or was a bunch of water in the oil how it got there i dont know :shrug: As for the plugs i was missing the small one in the back of the driver side head and i was missing the one right on the upper front SIDE of the passenger side head and which both are now plugged and ready to go. When I pulled the heads off there was 1 cylinder on each side that had some rust coloring on the cylinder walls and that concerned me as well as the water in the oil. Im confused guys can anyone suggest what i should do or what?

sorry, i can only give advice for what I have experience with..my swap went rather smooth. sorry bro..I wish I had coolant in my oil to help you out :) try starting a new thread with the heading stateing your new problem.

The rust color is to be expected from the water getting in the oil.

Not sure if will be a problem or not. I would expect that the rings would just clean it off when the car is started again.

I would guess the stain could be removed safely with a soft cloth, but this is just my knowledge rather than actual doing, so you might want to check with someone else.

The oil plugs by the sound of them are there to cover holes needed to cast the heads or for external connections to the lubrication system. They don't separate coolant and oil.

It sounds like the head gasket didn't seal properly and allowed water to enter the cylinders. If the heads have been checked for flatness then it's something to do with the gaskets or the installation.

While you have the heads off it's probably a good idea to put them side by side and compare. Follow the oil and coolant passages to see if you missed anything else.

Now I know why I haven't bothered to do this modification though.

WoW.....

I thought I had a hard time with my headswap. I too, forgot the damn galley plugs :doh:

I was able to get them in with the heads still on. I don't have A/C anymore, but who needs it when you have a vert and live in Cali. LoL...

Anyhow...
The water was probably from inside the block. When you crack the heads off all the water and oil mixes together into the block. I ran the car for about 500 miles then changed my oil and flushed the radiator. The head will slightly hang off the back of the block, but only about 1/4 of an inch, at least that's about what mine hung off. Since you have torn the block back down, you MUST get new head bolts and gaskets. The head bolts are TTY and the gaskets are a one time use (if they are the ford ones). You can use the timing cover gaskets/seals, valve cover gaskets, and itake gaskets over again. It seems you have it all torn down and the problem fixed, so the rest is cake, you've already done it once. Just take your time.

thanks Blev that makes me feel alittle better about my situation. I never htought about the water getting into the block after i pulled the heads the first time. But i kept the oil drain plug plug out the entire time i did the swap so any thing would run out and nothing ever did. Would the water have just set in the motor without coming out?

ok guys im starting my redo of my headswap. Heads and cams are in and i just need to start the torque sequences on both of them. Im still alittle anxious as to see if this thing is gonna leak or not. Atleast now i have the stupid plugs in lol...which i think was the whole problem to begin with lol...i prolly didnt even need to tear this thing apart again. but oh well atleast i know what and how to do this now for future cam swaps and stuff.
