like the title says, if i had say a bone stock 98 gt and decided to swap over to pi heads, cams and intake would i NEED a tune (handheld or custom) or could i just install the new parts, fill 'er up with 91 and head out?

I belive you'll need a new tune. You might be able to find a chip, or programmer with a pre-programmed tune for just the PI swap.

You don't NEED a tune, but you SHOULD get a tune. If you think about it, that's quite a change from what the ECU is used to...higher CR, more flow, you know the drill. It will help you leech out every last HP from the swap as well as making sure it's withing proper specs as far as A/F ratio is concerned.

I would get one, you'll also benefit from it too. Im doing the swap this spring with VT stg 1 cams and will be getting a tune. Im hoping for 300rwhp

i'm assuming it would be a very noticeable difference in power though right?


also would the exhaust manifolds from the '98 fit on the pi heads?

yes you will notice it... its like night and day... yeah re use the 98 exhaust manifolds, same thing as PI Exhaust

98 non-pi manifolds are the same as the pi manifolds?

Good luck with that

I decided not to do the swap. The cars mileage was getting higher, and higher, so I decided to sell it, get the cobra, and get something for a daily driver.
Just so you know, there will be a very noticable increase, but not killer.

Exhaust manifolds yes.. ports are the same, same size, smell the same.. both hurt your feet when you drop em on your toe..

just realized that i didnt answer the original question.. no you dont NEED a tune.. but its a good idea whenever you do a major mod.. i drove on my PI heads for about 10,000 miles before i got an SCT tune

I didn't get one after the swap...it would be a good idea but i drove for several months without one and had no problems.
