Also I found out in a search, that on another forum a member emailed Shell, and the Shell Rotella HD30 has 1200 ppm zinc, and I also discovered today that the blue bottle of STP does in fact have ZDDP.

My car sounds good too!

Blue does have it, but red has about 40% more. I am looking at ZDDP+ for future oil changes. I have been using Mobil1 diesel.

Wow! I didn't realize it had that much more. I didn't think blue had it until I saw it in very small print on the front label. "*ZDDP additive"

Oh, here's some vids. I shot them with my digital camera so the sound isn't great and a little crackly but you get a feel for the idle characteristics.

I know, the car looks like hell, but it's a work in progress. It WAS flat black (looked pretty sweet for a while) but it's all faded now. I've been keeping/working on this car at my wife's grandmother's house right down the road, because it's the only garage I have available. You might notice my 63 Fairlane too!

Those stupid pistons yeild somewhere between a 9 and 9.5 to 1 comp ratio with 64 cc heads. (that's what these are with E7's in the 87-97 351W) So it's not all as bad as you'd think. If you bought 58 cc heads, then you're looking at mid 9's to 10 to 1 on the ratio.

My heads are 61cc, so that should put me in the middle in probably mid 9's I guess.

I figured they were less than that, the dish is about 1/4 inch deep. I guess I always expect the worst, lol.

Those are the stock pistons used in all 351's from the late 70's till the end in 97. You can look em up on Silvolites (KB pistons) site and look up the actual ratio with various chamber sizes. I know the ratio is somewhere in the 9's with 64 cc heads, just not sure exactly where.

Ooops!! I was wrong. Those ARE stupid pistons. I went to Silvolite's site and they're listed at 7.65 to 1.

I really don't think they are that low. I mic'd the depth, width, and length at the longest part of the dish (as if it were a true rectangle, therefore making my calculations high), and got approximately a 34cc dish, keep in mind it is really less, but for the sake of it being easier and giving me a worst case scenario.

Plugging that into a compression ratio calculator, I get 8.2 for the 34cc dish, and 8.5 for a 30cc dish, wish is really closer to what I think they are.

If you REALLY want to know, just get a piece of polycarb at a local store, a cheap plastic seringe with cc's, and some rubbing alcohol, and some grease. All stuff very easy to find. First cut the plastic round, JUST smaller than the bore. Deburr it good. Place it on the piston and mark a spot at the very top of the dish. (It's clear, you can see through it) Take it out and drill a very small hole in it. Then take the grease and put just around the dish - Just enough to seal the piston to the plastic. You will actually be able to see the grease sealing as you press it on to the piston, so just look all the way around the dish to see if it sealed. Take your seringe and put whatever it has for cc's in of the alcohol. Keep filling it up, noting how many cc's you are putting in. Now this is NOT a perfect scenario, but you will be within one or at the very most 2 cc's of actual. THIS will tell you. Done.
