Ok I have a 95 thats all stock...new plugs, new wires, air filter. I checked the timing..did it the correct way..unplug the spout...turn car on and adjust..turn car off..put spout back in...that is the correct way right? Anyhow at 10* the car will ping at wot on 87 octane...so I red did timing to 8* and noticed today on the freeway when my aode will down shift it will ping for a lil at wot..not as bad as when at factory 10*...so now I have it set at 6* and havnt tested it yet...my car has 130xxx miles on all stock 5.0 and runs and idle good etc just pings at 10*& 8*
which kinda bugs me... Any suggestions?

Check the balancer first, since they go bad so frequently. It's entirely possible that the outer ring spun and what you think is 8° is instead something like 14° of initial timing. Also, try pulling codes and see if anything comes up.

yeh no codes, How to check if the outer ring spun? Any bad effects of the out ring being spun other than say 8* being 14*?

The balancer is a counterbalance to the engine's rotational mass, so if the balancer has spun then you'd get a noticeable engine shaking. If it's only spun a little bit the balance might not be off enough; it all depends. Have you noticed more vibration in the engine, which goes up and down with engine RPM?

Theres no "violent/annoying" engine vibration while driving. I guess it could be possible though it spun a lil? Maybe Ill run some 89 octane and see if its any better?

There is no such thing as spun a little so I'll try a higher octane. Look very, very carefully at the balancer and if you can see any signs of rubber protruding from the hub the balancer is toast. No ifs ands or buts. This is not a I'll wait and see if it gets worse scenario.

I have to second this post. A Pioneer SFI balancer is $179 from summitracing.com, but bearings and machine work cost a LOT more than that.

we also get carbon buildup on the tops of the pistons which increases the compression, especially when alot of carbon has built on. increased compression means more pinging. i have heard that seafoam is made for that, but i have never used it, but i thought it was worth mentioning

another sign of a bad balancer is wobbleing. i noticed mine when trying to retime after swaping the dizzy. balencer and dizzy are probally due anyway. i went with stock replacements because they lasted 14 years and that's not to bad either.

Is the EGR bypassed? My car pinged on everything but 93 octane when I had my EGR disabled....

Clean your MAF, could be running really lean, which can cause pinging. When i first bought my car, it was gutless as all hell, and had an over used, over oiled K&N filter on it and was throwing lean codes. I wouldnt doubt it had an 1/8inch of oily dirt residue built up on the front of the wires. The butt dyno said i picked up an easy 100HP.

Take the sensor out of the housing and spray it down with either Electrical contact cleaner or residue-free brake cleaner, then soak a Q-tip with the cleaner, and very carefully rub the wires. Keep using new Q-tips until they come away clean, then use a dry one to finish.

Worked like a charm for me, and i find just spraying it alone doesnt clean it well enough.

It would also be good to check / replace the IAT (intake air temperature) sensor and the ECT (engine coolant temperature) sensor.

Those sensors can be cause for pinging.

Thats what I was thinking...I drove home today and at 6*~7* no ping at all...I looked at my balancer and it seem not wobble or have seperated. I opened the hood and held the throtle at diff rpms and its smooth still...so I was assuming carbon build up also. I was stuck on the balancer being a posibility untill I checked it out and have no strange vibrations. Ill try some sea foam.....

Thanks for all the replies and suggestions..very help full guys. I appriciate it.

If the hb outer ring has spun as some have said .....

When your #1 slug is topped out

You'll notice the TDC mark no longer lines up correctly

Heh, a "slug" is slang for a piston. To translate, "when the #1 piston is at the top of its stroke..."

I had the same problem as have many others with our cars. everyone is pointing you in the right direction. Things like new sensors are always good as our pcm is very picky. Seam foam is crazy. Certainly eats away carbon. I tried all of these before buying a SFI balancer. It was the problem in my case. It had spun and had less miles than you. My car still pinged at 8* under WOT under load. I wasn't very happy. But who knows where it really was, obviously way higher.

Good Luck

Oh ya and clean the maf. As stated above it can cause a lean ping under load. Should be cleaned from time to time anyways. It gets worse if you have some sort of after market air filter that you oil. Oil can stick to the sensor followed by dirt.

Some thing else I read was certain CAI's have funny bends that redirect the air flow over the maf in such a way that it gets a funny reading. What kind of air intake are you running. Just a thought. I have no proff my self of this causing the problem.

Once again Good Luck

A thorough sea-foaming cured my pinging. I used it on the throttle body, in the gas, and through the vacuum hose on the break booster, right into the manifold.

Have you pulled the spark plugs and examined them?
