Here is my situation, i recently got offered a trick flow street upper and lower with 30 pound injectors, C&L meter and elbow, adjustable regulator 400 buck from a good friend so i bought it, i installed it on my car with a 3/8 trick flow spacer. With this installed i cant run 10 degrees timing cuz it pings like crazy. i know 30 pounds is big for my stock motor for now but i have plans for something better later on, I heard people running 30 pounds in a stock motor with no problems. I have heard that the c&l meter does not like a cold air intake elbow i have tried rotating the meter to see if it helps and no luck. i replaced 02 sensors, IAT sensor and ECT sensor cuz i heard those might cause the pinging. NO luck with those either. the fuel pressure is set up at 38 psi with vacuum and 40 without. Anybody think that i should buy a pro m instead since i want to ad a blower later on or should the c&l meter work. I also run 91 octane and still pings, Any help would be appreciated this
pinging is driving me nuts!!!!!!!!!!!!

About 1 month ago, I got the C&L mass air kit, pipe accufab tb and C&L plenum. I immediately started pinging and I kept getting "too lean" codes. After 2 weeks of screwing around with it, I finally decided that more air was coming in than was being reported by the Mass Air Meter, so not enough gas was being used.

Did you try rotating the Mass Air Meter to different angles? I hear that can help, but it didn't help me.

I ended up going back to stock, which was just as well, because I also coincidentally decided to sell the 96 and buy a 95 (which is why I am on this forum!).

This was on my 96, but it may provide some insight.

I have rotated it in everydirection possible but no luck, Thats why i was thinking of buying a pro m since it is calibrated for the 30s and fooling the pcm with the c&l .

i think you are on the right track. imo, the o2 sensors, iat and ect sensors were red herrings ...

yeah i noticed that you tried rotating it after my post, sorry. i would have tried some other things if i were going to keep the 4.6, but i found a good 5.0 that i can swap to without the wife noticing ( ). you can get so much more for so much less with the 5.0s.

thats the reason i have mine is cheap and fun to work on. Except when you run into problems like this one. I also hear that if you bump up the fuel pressure it should help, Havent tried this but im not sure on this one. anybody try this?

What size is the mass air and do you have the correct sampling tube installed for the 30#'ers? BTW I had a pro m and the car ran like crap. How did this set up run on your buddies car? Also is the EGR system working correctly?

I have the 76mm c&l and it is calibrated for 30 pounds, when it was on my buddies car it pinged but not as bad as it is on mine, his is a 5 speed mine is an auto if that makes a difference. The egr system is working ok. I was told that the pro m bullet is a better meter that c&l, but i guess i could be wrong?

I think it's hit or miss with the mass air meters. You read the same about both from different people. Seems to be alot of inconsistancy from both though.

Thats true i have read both but in my case i have the c&l and this pinging is driving me crazy, i cant run stock timing, my car feels like it bogs when i step on it, when i run 10 it responds so much quicker and it feels good except it pings like you wouldnt believe, also the gas prices in cali are high and it gets expensive running 91. I wish it wouldnt ping and i wouldnt mind paying the prices. So at this point i would not mind trying a new meter for the heck of it and ill just sell the c&l.

how do you know those injectors are flowing correctly? Is it possible one or more is clogged or damaged? What do you plugs tell you? did you change your timing when you added the injectors or did that stay the same?

Pinging = lean
to solve you need to quench the flame. Do this by adding fuel. Simplest method is adjustable fuel pressure regulator. add 2psi increments until pinging is gone.

I bet something is up with the injectors or sample tube or both.

My plugs look to be fine, and before i changed over with my stock setup iwas able to run 14 degrees fine, as soon as i installed this setup i had to go down i tried 10 no luck and now i believe im around 8 degrees and no pinging it just feels slow to respond, i have an adjustible regulator, right now its at 38 with vaccum and 40 without it. I thought about bumping the fuel pressure but how much, i dont want to over doo it. What do you guys suggest, im willing to try anything to solve this issue.

My CL 73 is doing pretty well too. Running 15 or so advance and so far no pinging. You could try cleaning the MAF sensor for a cheap fix.

Both pro-m and c&l fool the eec to make different injectors work. The proper way to get new injectors to work, it with a chip or tuning device. Any maf can work with any injectors regardless of "calibration" if a chip/tuning device is used. To answer your question, tr cleaning the maf elements. WHAt is your fuel pressure at?

We've had many problems tryin to get his car to stop pinging. We've cleaned the MAF sensor multiple times and the fuel pressure is at 40 with vacuum off. Its been narrowed down to either the MAF or the 'puter. But the puter seemed to turn out ok in a diagnositics test. Fuel pressure stays steady while driving and hard acceleration.

The weird part is WHEN it pings. It doesnt ping more as you accelerate. It seems to ping mostly under part throttle driving right before a shift should take place (AOD). When i've had problems pinging its gotten progressively worse as the rpms climbed and it was because of timing. But his car pings at part throttle and its BAD. It pings more at part throttle than at WOT. Its very weird...........

How is his TPS? Well, maybe it is the MAF after all. GL.

That is EXACTLY the behavior I was seeing. Also, when it was cold, it didn't ping nearly as much, but once the engine was warmed up, it would start pinging at about 2700 and get worse as the rpms went up. I finally decided that more are was coming in than was being reported to the computer. I bet if you put a screen in there or do something to restrict the air flow a little, the pinging will get better. I know that's contrary to the whole idea of a more free flowing MAF, but it is better than pinging like mad.

I also had a problem with running lean when I had my 76mm C&L. I had to run way too much fuel pressure to try and compensate for it. Swapped my old 73mm back in and the problem went away. Could be that there were other factors but I wouldn't know what they were. FYI, I used the same sample tube for both meters.

Thats why im thinking of buying another meter and see if that helps, i can just sell the C&L on ebay and try the pro-m and try my luck there, if not i guess i can get some 19 back in the car and run the stock meter. Thanks guys.
