Well I just recently installed my C&L pipe and a K&N filter... and I also added a kind of Ram Air from my fog light hole that straps right to the side of the filter. Now when I romp on it it seems to be pining in at around 3600 RPM. What can I do to correct this?

If it is pinging from the engine you need to check/adjust your timing or run better gasoline. Sounds more likely that you have a vibration. Check around the area you were working in to see if you left something unsecured. Good luck

everything is tight as tight can be, I do believe it is an engine ping because it only happens under heavy acceleration like marbles in a soup can, as soon as I let off its gone.

Yep, looks like pinging. Check and adjust timing. Don't know how much you know about timing so take no offense please. Stock timing should be 10* which allows for 87 octane usage. If you decide to boost timing to say 14* you will need to use 91-93 octane. I have found that at 14* running 91 octane I get 1mpg better than running in stock form. I know the price isn't worth it but the power gain is IMHO.

I dont think its timing or gas. Changes in the air intake area of the car can make a big mess. Before anything else, I'd make sure you allow your computer to relearn the new setup. Thats a lot for it to learn at one time. I'd also try rotating the MAF (assuming you have a C&L MAF) so that the top of the sensor is facing the battery. The 3 o'clock position seems to be a good rotation for it.

Sometimes this is pretty obvious but also make sure you clean the electrodes on the MAF sensor with electronics cleaner. K&Ns cause all kinds of problems with our cars due to the oil being sucked up all over the MAF sensor. Go REALLY light on the oil for the K&N. Otherwise you'll have to clean that thing like every week.

One other thing is make sure that you indexed your ACT sensor when you reinstalled everything. It must be rotated within the tube so that it gets maximum contact with the incoming air. I hate it when people suggest this stuff to me cuz thats always what I check but I dont know how aqcuainted you are with this stuff.

Good luck!

A few people have brought up good points, and some questions need to be answered.

1) What grade of gasoline are you using, and would you be willing to run a stronger grade of gasoline? If so, what grade?

2) What mods are done to the motor, that boost horsepower. I don't care about 3.73s or LCAs. Only mods to boost horsepower. What is the timing set at?

3) Do you have just the C&L inlet tube or the whole 76mm C&L kit?

If it is actual pinging, stay out of it or don't even drive it. It that is what it is, get it fixed fast. Check to see if your distributor bolt or the distributor is loose.

Well My mods are in my sig, so close to none, it seemed to ping only above 3500 rpm, I did notice it doesnt do it in 1st gear at all, I can pretty much redline it and no ping just 2nd 3rd and I havent checked to see if it does in 4th and up.

You show a C&L pipe, is that the meter also? I had the 76mm kit, and after a year of fighting with the pinging, I fixed it by putting the stock one back on. I tried almost everything that was suggested on this sight, with no luck. I did try clocking it also, but not to the extent suggested by jmuva44. Maybe I'll put it back on and try that. I have almost come to the conclusion that it may just be the stock heads though. BTW, mine only pinged in the RPM range of about 3K to 4K, no higher.

I had problems with the C&L too. I did everything I could think of. I swapped it with a ProM and everythings much better. My other car the C&L worked great. I think different computers may like it but some just dont.

Yeah, after much consideration, I've decided that our pinging problem is mostly due to our MAF sensor. First thing I did with the tweecer was richen the MAF curve. It made a huge difference. No more pinging, and more power.

I used to think it was becuase of our crappy heads, but the datalogs show it to just be really lean and the MAF reading low under high loads.

With the addition of the K&N filter, you may have clogged the MAF sensor from the oil in the filter. Clean it with alcohol & a q-tip. See what happens.

This is exactly why I won't buy the C&L MAF's. Too many problems. Pro-M for me please!
