My pinging problem is so bad it sounds like the lifters are floating.

I have run a test that is in the quote below and did what it said. It will not ping cold but at normal oper. temp it pings bad, so bad that I will not drive the car.
As soon as the car gets to about 180 deg it pings so bad above 2800 rpms that a freaking mini van passed me going up an on ramp, so I drove home and parked it and have not driven it sense. :nonono:

This is what I have done to the car.
1) New plugs,wires,cap,rotor
2) Timing set at 8%
3) Cleaned MAF
4) New K&N air filter
5) New ACT
6) New ECT
7) New thermostate 180%
8) New 02 sensors
9) New 190 fuel pump
10) New Kirban AFPR (fuel pressure set at 41psi)
11) New fuel filter
Miles on car 100,090

I did the test in the quotes below warm and cold and I do have a autometer temp gauge so I am able to tell what temp I was running.

I did all the test and still pings. No pinging when cold at WOT but pings like crazy when 180deg. from 2800 rpms up. :mad:

Can I up the fuel pressure to about 45 psi :shrug:
 
I too had the dreaded ping problem with my stang. I did most of the same things you did but to no avail. Even after switching over to AFR heads I still had the problem, only not as bad. I FIRMLY believe the problem is with the tune Ford gave it. My solution was to get a custom tune from SCT for $385. Since that tune I have yet to hear even the slightest hint of detonation. The tuner, whoever it is, can adjust the timing and fuel curves to eliminate the ping. You still have a few more options. You can get a PIH kit and retrofit the famed A9L computer or you can get a TwEECer and tune it yourself. If none of these can be done then run the highest octane possible, get an aluminum radiator, and retard the timing. These won't eliminate it but it should keep it at bay. Good Luck.
 
:stupid: what he said.....I have had this terribly frustrating problem as well...however I now have it to the point where it must be quite hot to get it to do this (like 90 degrees) and here in washington that is rarely a problem...only other thing I can think of is maybe there is a restriction in your fuel lines...???
 
Ever once and a while I has some pinging when my car was stock. I ported some E7's and cleaned up the chambers some and after the head swap the ping was only present on very hot days.

I started to research the workings of our pcm's and came to learn that Ford delivered the t4m0 (GT) with very lean af ratios to help with emissions and the spark curve on the t4m0 is pretty aggressive as well.

I compared the t4m0 to the j4j1 (Cobra) pcm and saw that the fuel tables were fatter and the spark tables were not as aggressive with the j4j1 tune.

After seeing those differences I came to the conclusion that the t4m0 as delivered from Ford is right on the verge of pinging and some of the GT's ping from day one.

You don't ever hear the Cobra guys cry about the ping thing.

After I got the Tweecer I dialed in a bit more fuel which made the ping disappear and it never returned.

I have seen some say they incressed their fuel pressure and it helped the ping. Then again the pcm might be able to dial that back with it's adaptive strategy so you might have to up it a time or two until it has reached its adaptive lean limit.

I did not mean to imply that the j4j1 values from the Cobra would be the ultimate fix for you. I just used it for an example to compare to the stock GT pcm values.

If you are gonna get a pro to tune your car I would bet he will just fatten up the fuel tables in your t4m0. This will make the ping thing go away.

As for the fuel pressure settings I don't have any experience or knowledge with afpr's.

I do wonder about a couple things ...... Just thinking out loud here .... ok

I think I've seen that 39psi is the stock value for fuel pressure.

If you up it say 4psi that is about 10% which should be enough to make some difference.

If the ping goes away then thats great ...... however......you might have to wait a few days or maybe a week or two (depends on how much you drive the car) to see if the pcm has learned its way around your mechanical adjustment.

Now that the temps have cooled a good bit you may not be able to really know if something like this would work.

Again I don't know anything about afpr's so maybe 4psi is too much and 2psi might do the trick. You'll just have to search some old threads on ping (you know there is a ton of them) or maybe someone who has killed the ping using inflated fuel pressure will post in this thread.
