Pinion shaft bolt.....broke.

Trying to change the rear axels. The pinion shaft bolt broke flush. The little 5/16" bolt on the side of the differential. I already drilled it out. But once I hit the shaft I can't drill no more. Shaft will not come out. This is a PITA. Any idea's?



I have an old Turbo coupe differential down in my basement. Will this work? Thinking about just torching the diff.

I had that happen to me. I did what my buddy told me to do and it came right out. Put a magnet in the hole and see if you can pull it out. I got lucky and the bolt snapped after the threads. See if you got lucky like me.

I'm screwed. LOL

Does that shaft have a keyway in it? Or is the shaft recessed where the bolt goes in. To hold that shaft.

I'm praying to god it's completely smooth.

The crosspin just has a hole in it. The bolt threads in but the part of the bolt that goes through the pin isn't threaded. hard to explain through the keyboard. Try the magnet trick if it doesnt work, read the link.

I'm off for a small magnet. That ebay link looks promising also.

Exact same thing happened to me when I went to rebuild my trac loc. Nothing a new diff didn't fix. Never anything easy. I pouned the shaft out with the remaining pin still in there. Had no other choice.

a turbo coupe rear end will definetly work. i think its like 1/2" wider but it wont be a big deal. plus its disk brakes

I gave up on it for today. And I thought I was in the clear after the 95 brake booster nightmare.

I'll have to hit up fastenal tomorrow for a long ass drill bit.

ECU- What is .5"'s wider? The actually T-loc housing?
I have a 8.8 t-lock rebuild kit. That I will use.

did you mean you have an entire rear housing for a turbo coupe or just the differential that goes in the housing. if you just have the differential (chunk) that it will work because its an 8.8. but the entire housing axle to axle is like .5 or .75" wider

The TC axles are 3/4" longer. The axle housing is the same size as the 8.8 on Mustangs. I have a TC rear end in my Mustang, it wasn't hard to do.

I have some tech info that shows you how to do 5 lug axles on a TC rear end and retain the disk brakes without any drilling or machining. PM or email me if you are interested.

It turned into a big hack job. Had to use a dremel with a small cut-off wheel. And actually square the shaft somewhat. It was a big relief once it came out.

I hope the Cobra brake kit is what it's all cracked up to be. Cause everything is going wrong for me with this install.
