Okay, this may sound like a silly question. But If I were to install normal flat top pistons with a 1.645" compression height that would put them an additional .045" "in the hole" at TDC, increase valve clearance and drop compression right?
Another question. From what I understand, stock pin diameter is .927". I'm looking at some pistons with a pin diameter of .9122". Would it be recommended that I install larger pins in the new pistons so I can run the current rods. Or get rods with a smaller bore for the smaller pin diameter.
This would be with the 1.645" compression height pistons. Is that going to give me enough meat to punch out the pistons for a bigger pin?
First the taller CH put the pistons out of the bore way to far, so they will not work at all. Depending on what brand piston they are you could mill them but it may take too much meat off the crown.
Second, you should buy the piston with the correct pin size for your rod, or change rods....
What are your exactly are you trying to do? There are many off the shelf parts that will work with the stock crank.
Yeah I just realized I was thinking about that backwards.
I'm putting some 2v 351c heads on a 302. The primary issue I'm concerned with right now is P/V clearance. I was thinking about using the 351c pistons but you're right, they're not going to work unless I get a shorter rod (and i don't like short rods) or maybe a 289 crank. (which I think basically bolts in) The 351c has a smaller piston pin diameter than the 302. I might be able to use 302 boss pistons, but i'm not sure what the measurements on those are. And they're going to be hard to find.
