Play in distributor shaft?

A couple of weekends ago me and a buddy did the intake gaskets on my 88 and when we pulled the distributor he noticed that the shaft had a little play in it. not so much that i would have noticed it but he did. how much should the shaft "wiggle"? I know it shouldn't move a great deal but i would think there would be a small amount of movement

If the shaft wiggles enough to be noticeable, it's time to replace the distributor.

you should pull the distributor and inspect the gear for wear, and see how much the shaft moves up and down

Not really and up and down motion, more of a side to side.

My had play like that... Replaced it and the car runs much better now. Mine was so bad the rotor would touch the cap while the engine was running.

I bought a motorcraft reman one from oriellys for 65-75$

I called the local oriellys and the guys there didnt have anything on a motorcraft reman dizzy. you wouldn't still have the receipt that might have a part number on it would ya?
