Play in the rear axle

How much in/out and up/down play is normal for a rear axle? With my car jacked up and the rear brakes removed, I can slide my axle in and out about 1/8 of an inch. With the brakes and tire installed I can lift up on the tire and feel/hear play between the axle bearing and axle shaft. Is any of this normal?

No, when you got the gears put in did you replace the axle bearings?

I don't know because I bought the car with the gears installed. Since then I have replaced the axle bearings. I have also rebuilt the rear end. i.e new clutch packs and shims.
