Okay my dad and I are having this long debate about the rear end on my car. My car has the stock 13 in wheels on it that are soon to be changed to 15x8's on the back. Now my major concern is traction, getting it to hook up at the track is very important for getting my times down. Now my dad is talking about sending the car to the shop to get the differintial seal changed because it's leaking, and while it's in there he wants to have gear's put in it. My preference is around 3.73's. NOW he belives that if we put 15 inch wheels on the back then we have to put lower gears in it to improve the way its hooking up at the track. But my car doesn't even have trac-lok It's a one wheel wonder. So I've been trying to tell him 15's and lower gears aren't going to help much if the power isn't getting put down through both tires. So he thinks that we don't need to worry about getting trac loc right now because the gears are going to fix a lot. I say Trac loc or nothing at all. If we don't do both at the same time, I don't want gears in the car until it has the locker. Please someone please help me explain this! :bang: :bang:

how about this for the merits of a good limited slip. my traction with 3.08 and a high mileage trac lock was not as good as after i swapped it out for a new trac lock and 3.73's. go figure, it kinda suprised me too.

What all is done to the '74. If it's your typical Mustang II, it probally doesn't even get one wheel to peel. Traction-loc's are in so many stock Fords. Pull one out of a junkyard, rebuild, and install for cheap. Is your's a 7.5 or 8.8? It doesn't see like your to dedicated to performance.

The lower gear will make traction problems much worse. If you had dead gears, the car would not be prone to spinning, but lower gears will only make traction more of a challenge. Spend a few dollars now rather than going back in there later.

Ouch, that was sharp.

I would be ashamed taking a stockish II to the track... :nonono: Sell it and buy a real car... not the red headed step child from Ford that everyone tries so hard to forget.

Tell it how it is, why don't you? I guess the truth hurts.

First, figuer out what rear is in the car.It could be a 7.5", a 8",or an 8.8".If its a 7.5", I dont know were to get a track lok.I know they sell a spool for the 8",and of course the 8.8" should be easy to get a track lok for.

My rear is an 8" and I know where to get Trac loc and gears for it easily. An 8.8 or 9" rear will not easily swap in without modification. So sayeth the II guys. I'm looking for the easiest quickest fix to the problems. Thank you all for your advice.

It's not a typical mII and trust me it can spin the tires, which is mostly due to the lack of traction. :rlaugh: It has a 79 5.0 block with 85 HO components, a crane cam 272 dur. and 484 lift, a Ford Racing T 5, a 3 in custom made driveshaft.... and a few other things that aren't important to the list. lol

Spool...

Then take it easy in the corners.
A spool is not a good solution for a car that is primarily a street machine. If you car has an 8.8" rear axle, the Trac Lock from a Turbo Coupe or 87-93 5.0 GT and some new gears with your choice of ratio's would be the best thing. Spools & non limited slip (no trac lock) are not as safe on the wet and slippery streets as a good trac lock. A Spool or no track lock is good for a NASCAR pro like Greg Biffle, but you aren't him :D
