hey guys, i have a million questions but right now i will stick with the important ones. i have an 87 gt 5.0 5speed. my first question is my speedo gear is yellow so whats my rear gear, 2.73?? next, the ignition switch on my column gets very hot, so hot it smokes. it has started to melt the connector that goes into it. im scared its going to burn up my car. what should i look at, loose connection, bad ground, or the switch itself being bad??? lastly, whats the best cam for a my setup, i have mac unequeal headers, cai, o/r hpipe, and 40 series flowmasters, smog pump delete, other than that its stock, speed density setup. PLEASE HELP ME.

I can answer the one...your iginition switch is probably bad...There was a recall on those switches. If you dont want to deal with that they are like 15 or 16 dollars. When replacing make sure you check your melted wires for any problems that might arise later on...

I would check the DS:wheel revolution ratio to ensure you know what gears you have - someone might not have used the proper speedo gear. It is sort of a definitive way of knowing, rather than deductive.

Good luck.

Don't go off of the color of that spedo or drive gear to determine your rear gear ie: some people change rear gears w/out swapping in the correct spedo gear. Besides I do not think a yellow spedo gear exists although yellow drive gears do.To determine your rear gear look at the sticker inside your drivers door jam, find the code that says AX the letter below AX tells you what gear came in it from the factory. I believe M is for the 2.73's, don't know about the others. Try searching gears I have seen those codes before in here.

Yup, if your car is stock (and you know if for a fact) you can use the door label...

then go to www.muntanggt.org and can help you decode your car for you. It's lots of fun!

Unless someone swapped in a different set of gears you probably have 2.73's. Most 87-93 foxes cam with these. Right now I would say the best cam for your setup is the stock cam. You aren't going to notice much gain by just swapping in a cam. To tell you the truth, putting in a larger cam than stock with your setup will actually hurt your performance and idle. I would suggest spending the money on putting in some 3.73 gears or save up to do a H/C/I (Heads, Cam, Intake). As for the switch, check the wiring to make sure there is no bare wire showing and replace the switch.

Speed density= no major mods. You really cant do H/C/I with it. Unless you have the computer reprogrammed. Which kind of sucks. Dont get a cam until u do H/C/I.

Don't get a cam until you convert to Mass air flow. Then do what ever you want to the car until it won't idle anymore

when combos are carefully chosen, one can get away with a decent amount with a SD actually.
