Please Help! Rebuilt T5 Problem

Rebuilt the stock t5 trans today. I get it in the car, all hooked up ready to go. As I start the car and cycle through the gears, 2nd gear makes a horrible grinding noise when I let out the clutch. None of the other gears grind. Just second gear. It sounds like it's going to explode that's how bad it is. Any help is greatly appreciated. Just rebuilt using ford service manual for t5. 88 mustang Borg Warner t5

It just grinds, or does it engage and make a horrible noise?

Sounds like you are ripping the trans apart again

Too many variables here. I'm with Mike. No way to know for sure without cracking the case.

I'm assuming that during the rebuild you replaced either 2nd gear, or the cluster? The number of teeth on 2nd gear changed over time, and while I'm not even sure it's possible to install a 31t gear in place of a 30t and vice-versa, I'm wondering if we're all about to find out.
