I'm having a problem with my brake lights.
- Only the right side brake light lights when I step on the brakes.
- Both left and right turn signals work properly
- taillights work

Here's where it gets a little confusing - If I step on the brakes while the right turn signal is on, then the left brake light works.

Please help, I'm at a loss.

The wires to the brake lights run through the turn signal switch under the horn button. I'll bet you have something amiss in the turn signal switch.

Yup, I bet it's your turn signal switch. I had pretty much the same problem a while back.

The turn signals work by basically canceling out the brake light.

In my case, the spring in the turn signal switch was worn out and it let the turn signal lever fall a little lower than it should. It was just enough to cancel out the brake light but not actually turn on the signal.

Try pushing up on the turn signal lever just slightly and pressing the brake. You should have brake lights.

Thanks for the replys, guys. I think you both nailed it on the head, I've traced it back to the turnsignal switch. I guess, I'll have to pull the steering wheel this weekend and see it there is an easy fix or if it needs replacing.

Thanks,
Tim

might as well order the new switch b4 pulling it apart, they dont cost much and factory parts are still available.

Just a quick update to confirm everyone's opinions. I replaced the turnsignal switch with a new FORD unit (not repo) and everything works the way it is supposed to.

Thank all,
Tim

Where to buy

Where can I buy a new Ford turn signal switch for my 66 for a good price?

I have already bought what I believe is a repro switch but after pulling the steering wheel off and looking around, the switch I bought does not have all the same color wires. Most are the same but a couple are off such as having an orange wire, instead of an orange wire with a blue stripe... (I want to do the replacement correctly with the best switch out there.)

Thanks for any help!

I got my FORD turnsignal switch from Virginia Classic Mustang - http://www.virginiaclassicmustang.com/catalog/shop/

Their website is kind of a PITA, so I would just give them a call on Monday.
