well i am having a loss in power and also a bad idling problem once it levels out and quits surging it wil idle fine but i have a loss in power...i replaced everything and tried everything so here is all i got left...can a distributor cause this ...what to check for and could someone give me links on how to check for vac leaks and anythign else

Do the first things first...

Don't throw parts at a problem: it will just make you poor and tired. Take a systematic approach to troubleshooting, understanding what each part does and how it can effect the way the car runs.

Post you mods in your sig. That will help us understand what has been done to the car. Did you buy the car with the mods or did you add them yourself? What was the last thing you did before the problem started? Exactly what have you replaced? What haven't you replaced?

Next do some diagnostic work: dump the codes and see what the computer says is wrong…

Here's the link to dump the computer codes with only a jumper wire or paper clip and the check engine light, or test light or voltmeter. I’ve used it for years, and it works great.

See http://www.troublecodes.net/Ford/
OR
See http://www.dalidesign.com/hbook/eectest.html for more descriptive help
OR
See http://www.mustangworks.com/articles/electronics/eec-iv_codes.html

After you have the results of the dump, post the results. If you get only 11, the Computer OK code, then be prepared to do some further testing. A compression, fuel pressure & vacuum test would be in order.

i have replaced ....iab/egr/cap/rotor/plugs/wires/ etc.... i am also having a problem were my dist caps keep blowing like crazy except for the generic fomaco one from advance its just a junk replacment and it seems to never blow ive blown 2 msd and 1 accel unit this week....they just burn up in a matter of mins also had codes checked at advance and there were none

Blow the distributor cap? Could you explain in detail?

Time to check compression, fuel pressure and vacuum. All these checks require the proper test ewuipment. Autozone or other auto parts store may be willing to rent or loan the test equipment.

what im trying to say is that the rotor tip gets burnt and burns a line were it contacts each individual terminal on the cap...except for the cheap fomoco from advance.....checked vaccum fuel pressure gauge reads correct and timing is dead on....maybe 02 sensors???could they cause problems without throwing codes???

Just curious, what exactly is your fuel pressure set at (with vac line off FPR)? Where does the loss of power start to occur? I didn't know you could "blow" a dist. cap like that - weird. I'm pretty sure bad O2's would throw a code.

to explain the cap problem in more detail, what im trying to say is that the car will still run but will miss up top ...ive expeirenced the loss in power about a month ago id say and it is all through the rpm range it still is fast but not like it was and it isnt that im just getting use to it ...the only cap that doasent blow is the cheapy ....also fuel press is at 36-39 vac off i mess with it some here and there trying to feel were it runs better at....im also shifting it at 6250 it seems to pull hard to there but lately it just dont got it like it did....ive replaced everything and done everything except for a pickup in the dizzy and o2 sensors....
