Please indetify this Mustang

Hi,

I came across an abandoned Mustang in a scrapyard in the middle of nowhere. I have been searching for a Mustang for a while now and now that I found it, I would like to know what model it is. The guy at the scrapyard says it's a '67 coupe, is that the case? The coupe part is obvious as it has two doors but does the year look right? The part that puzzles me is the rear, it is not a fastback as it has a shorter window but it does not look like all the other coupe's I've seen on the internet either. The rear body panels kinda slopes backward from the roof towards the back. I am in South Africa and maybe the shape was a bit different than the ones in the States?

That is NOT a '67 coupe, it is a 71-73 coupe.

It's a 71 or 72 model (they were extremely similar). Ford did not formally export Mustangs to S.A., but a surprising number were exported there anyway. I know a Mustang supplier who has sent quite a lot of parts to S.A., so it's safe to say there are probably more running around now than years ago.

The 71-73 models are becoming more popular, so more parts are available now than anytime since the 70's.

Thanks for the info, as you can see from the photos it does not have an engine or transmission. But I'm getting it pretty cheap @ $400. What engine do you suggest I put in there? I would like to have a manual tranny

That car would have come with a 351 Cleveland probably, and is a prime candidate for a 429/460.

A manual trans will be hard to come up with clutch pedals and linkage for, but it can be done!

Just about any gas passenger car or light truck engine Ford made will fit in there, so what matters most is what you want. Judging by the manifolds in the engine bay picture, that car probably had a 302 or 351W in it before landing at the scrap yard.

EDIT: By the way, '67-68 Mustangs look like the one in my signature.

Yep I would love a 429 but they will be very expensive? How is the 351's prices compared to 429's?

All the engine prices will be comparable with each other except perhaps with a 302 being cheaper. 460 truck engines are not hard to find and interchangeable with a 429. Heck, I bought one from a neighbor for $100, so you never know. Now I'm trying to get rid the parts, but can't even give them away in this market.

Great, will the car accelerate much faster with a 429 in it than a 351? And which engine will lend itself better for future mods such as a supercharger or turbo?

Basically I will keep the engine stock for a while, but in the not so distant future I would like to get it up to 450 - 500hp. Which engine would be the best bet for that?

The 429 and 460 (externally identical) were quite common in Ford trucks, large cars such as station wagons, and standard in Lincolns. I think you'll find the 5th digit of the VIN on the car you're looking at is an "F", for 302 2V, which it what those exhaust manifolds are for.

The 302 is pretty smart, the 351C is stronger, and the 429/460 is enough to scare the beejezus out of your wife or girlfriend (hopefully the same person).

If the car is a 302, the rear axle will be the 8", good but not enough to handle a 460, or even a well set up 351.

Big car 460's sell pretty cheap here, because the demand is low.

Using a manual trans is tricky. The 460 in most applications had the C6 auto. There's one on eBay right now, for USD$700. manual will require the underdash pedal setup and mechanical or cable linkage, and a bellhousing and clutch, and a manual trans that can take the power. All this adds to cost.

I went to look at the car today and wrote the VIN down. After a quick search on the net I found out that it is a '72, that was build in Dearborn, MI, its a 2 Door Hardtop and it had a 302 2v V8 in it.
