first offu and alot of other stangers have inspired me to try my hand at polishing. So i took the alt apart and am starting with the back. i sanded alot of it down with a dremel but it has some spots that have good scratches on it. i have already gone over it REALLY good with 150 grit and am about to start with 220 and work my way up to 400 (spending at least 1 hour each grit)so if there are still some scratches left by the time i am ready to buff will the tripoli compound take care of it? should i put more than one coat? how about the white rouge just 1 coat also? (just ordered both from eastwood)

THAKS GUYS!!!

P.S i will post pics when done. :spot:

ok first what are u polishing?? i dont know much im a newbie to this subject but i have started to polish pieces on my bike. i have a 02 gixxer 600 and have found that stripping the paint, glass beading, and then using jewlers rouge work very very well. i did the three stages of jewlers rouge, BLACK, BROWN, and then WHITE. the pieces look like chrome and have no scratches.

well, the best way to polish aluminum is to sand with 80 grit to remove any deep scratches, then 120, 180, 220, 280, 300, 400 and then load a buffing wheel up with black buffing compound, and then color buff it..........i did a few peices for a friend when i worked at a buffing/polishing plant.....man it looked better than chrome......i'll never do it another way

teh best way and hte way almost stock and alotof guys do and myself are 80-120-180-220-320-400 and more if u want to. its all in how much/good u sand. then use Tripoli on a buff wheel then white rouge. (ON DIFFERENT BUFF WHEELS!!!!) theres no such thing as coats for white rouge and tripoli. just apply it to the wheels as necessary and go to town. slight to medium pressure on a drill or bench grinder. good luck

Tripoli doesn't fill the scratches. What Tripoli is used for is to remove the fine scratches left by sanding, and starts the polishing process. If you sand something with 320 grit Tripoli will remove those fine sanding marks, and since your sanding with 400 grit you'll definately have no worries of getting the sanding marks out.
Remember it's not how long you sand with one grite of sand paper, it's how well you remove the sanding marks left by the coarser grit you used before.
