Polishing issues!!!!

OK.. .I bought the Porter Cable 7424... I used it for the first time yesterday on my hood that was painted about 9 months ago. I applied McGuire's Paint Cleaner as step 1.. It was a PAIN IN THE A$# to buff out by hand and by machine. Then I went to Step 2, "Polish"... I applied that with the buffer using the polishing pad. I worked it into the paint pretty damn good on speed setting 6. Then I took a micro fiber towel to buff out the polish and the towel would actually get stuck to the dried polish on the paint. My hand kept slipping off the towel. I did finally buff off the polish, but am definately not impressed with the outcome. Could it be because I left the polish in my garage all winter? Could the chemicals have seperated? Is it my paint? Or, do I just not know how to polish my car?????

I know that i accidenatly left a bottle of liquid wax by Maguires in the trunk of my car all winter and it was all clumpy and and this cloudy water was pouring out of it. So maybe tempature is the problem? I never saw a storing temp label on the bottle or for any wax for that matter. i know when applying it you should do it during certain temps and in the shade.

How long did you let the polish sit on the car?

You are suppossed to let the polish sit a while so it can dry really well. When I polish the car I let the polish sit there as long as it can, I have even left it on overnight (obviously in the garage). It doesn't hurt the paint one bit. And when you go to wipe it off after it has been dried for a while, it comes off super easy.

I let my wax sit for about 3-5 minutes.... guess I have been doing it wrong . I was told by several people that you werent supposed to let it sit for a long ass time. Also your supposed to shake up the bottle before using it, plus keeping the car in the shade.

Your not suppossed to let the wax sit, only the polish can sit like that. The wax should only sit for a few minutes.

I do not have any issues getting wax off.. .that's easy... I am having problems removing polish.. I let that dry for maybe 2 minutes to a haze, then try and wipe off.. I just got the Pinnacle brand swirl remover and advanced polish and it worked MUCH better... I just think my polish was no good..

your first mistake is what you are using. if this is the stuff in the maroon bottle, its not designed to be used with a PC. and its pretty usless by hand. you need to buy products designed for machine polishing. if you shopping at a retail store, then you need to look at meguires stuff in the tan bottle or mothers machine polish. most polishes and waxes arent suppost to be left to dry unless thier directions say so.

Polishes are supposed to be worked until it almost disappears,then wipe the remaining product immediately.
I like Poor boys,Prima swirl,Autoglym,SFX and Clearkote polishes.

Well, I just got my Pinnacle advanced swirl remover and polish. MUCH BETTER! It wipes right off after I work it into the paint. And the results are amazing! I am still learning the limits of the DA buffer. So, I am sure I'll get even better at it in time. Pinnacle rocks!

Some polishes you are supposed to wipe off just before they start to flash (dry) while some are meant to be wiped off as soon as it it a little dry. I have never heard of any polish you are supposed to leave on any longer than after you are done working it. Waxes and sealants it is common to leave on for an hour or so, but not polishes.

+1 of Pinnacle and Poorboys very easy to use. Just like anything in this world you get what you pay for. By quality to get the quality....

if your using the meguiars 3 step, the polish has to come off right away, its says right on teh bottle not to let it dry, and for a wax i alwasy use the gold glass liquid wax they make, i do the entire car then go back and take it off, it comes right off. wax usually has to dry or turn cloudy before you take it off.

You don't need to leave polish on-just wipe it on and wipe it off-same with cleaner. Only wax needs to haze-the cleaner &polish don't need to dry to work. Also, all the Meg's products I have say not to let them freeze, that could also be part of your problem.

SLOW your machine down, like to 16-1800 RPM. I have had mine for years and Nver has it been up to 6000, you are creating to much heat..Put the wax on and immediately start moving it over the SMALL area that you are working on...stay on that area until it shines and buff with your soft towel. Then move on....
