popping & clunking sound ???

i noticed last week when i pull forward or back up i hear a popping sound and can slightly feel it in my shifter and it is getting louder i also noticed it does it real bad if im going to slow while in gear and when my car starts to jerk i can hear the popping and clunking sound ... my car has never made that sound before when that happens .. any suggestions guys oh and it only does it once when u back up or pull foward ummm like if u back up it will do it but to make it do it again u have to pull foward and then back up again if that makes any sense .. sorry

Check the driveshaft U-joints...now.

Do you know if it is coming from the rear-end or trans?

Could be the pressure plate also. Mine was doing it when the fingers in the pressure plate weren't allowing the throw out bearing to not engage squarely so I had half clutch engagement. It would only do it in first gear (steepest ratio) and when I was going slow. The car would jump and make a clunk sound like it was coming from the transmission almost like a loose input shaft.

As soon as my new clutch/pressure plate goes in I'll know for sure. I do know that it didn't happen before the clutch started to shudder.

could be ball joint worn out. word is they last about 90,000 miles. If it is, get it checked and replaced asap. A ball joint failure will do major damage at low speeds or result in a very bad crash/ death at high speeds. If your mustang is lowered with the stock A arms they could wear out a lot sooner. If your boot is ripped on a ball joint with no way to refill with grease it is a time bomb.



Also on the 03 mustang ford used a metal shaft that was too long on the rack. It would make a popping/grinding sound when slow motion turning, bumps, and backing up. They can be grinded down or you can buy the replacement part from ford. Not sure if this affected any other years.
