I have used this stuff and it works great as long as there is NOOO paint at all under it! I also sugest using an acid primer. When I used it I had no brush stokes butthe key is to not keep brushing it. Get it on and stay away from that area until its dry or if you are putting a second coat on you have to do it when its slightly tacky! My brother is using por-15 in his engine compartment. I'll let you know how it went when its done but it might not be for awhile. It also really tuff to sand! I like the stuff but I also have been going with eastwoods stuff so I can sand and topcoat it.

I had a strange problem with the semi gloss black POR-15 in my engine bay. I took it down to bare metal, and I used the metal prep they sell. I had hundreds, if not thousands of tiny air bubbles form as it was drying. It dried hard as a rock, but looked awful. I ended up having to take it down to bare metal again. I took a chance and used POR-15 again, and it happened again, although not nearly as bad. I decided I could live with it, as most of the visible places are OK. Has anyone else had this problem? Any ideas on what could cause it? The only thing I could think of was the high humidity in this area, but it's just a wild guess.

Did you shake the can of POR-15 to mix it? They say to only use a stiring motion or you'll get bubbles like that. Also, if you don't wash the metal ready off it will make bubbles in the POR-15. Think of acid under paint....

No, like Mr. Bond takes a martini, it was stirred not shaken. The most likely cause is the acid wasn't washed off well enough. It's also likely that I brushed over it repeatedly. Good info, thanks!

Ok, time to rez this from the depths of the archives..

I was wondering if POR-15 or any of the other products out there can be used under the vinyl top so that it would keep the metal from rusting out. Or should regular old paint with a clear coat be able to keep that from happening?

I like to use POR 15 in areas that will not be seen. I have had trouble with air bubbles also. I think its a very good product if used right and will bond well to oxidation. If you get it on you, expect to wear it for about a week. Looks like you are going all the way to the metal. If so, I would clean the metal with a phosphoric acid based cleaner (Metal ready?), then something like 3M First Clean, Final Clean, then a 2k or etching primer and then paint. Take care not to toutch the metal with your bare hands (salts and oils) as this will cause problems later. Thats my $.o2.
