Porno red paint - who da best?

Okay, so I have an obnoxiously white but perfectly un-cracked dash pad in my '84 that needs to match the other porno red parts of the interior. Here's my options for painting it to match:

1. Duplicolor Vinyl & Fabric Paint;
2. Krylon Fusion (supposed to be made specifically for painting plastic stuffs);
3. A can of red/burgundy Duplicolor Van & Truck paint I have laying around;
4. Just leave the red dashmat on top of it and hope nobody notices the white peeking out from underneath;
5. "OTHER"

I'm probably still going to keep the dashmat on the dash to protect the dash pad since OEM four-eye dash pads are kinda hard to come across in quality, un-cracked form, so I'm not too terribly worried about color fade. Mainly, I just want something that will not bubble up and flake off around the edges and/or turn all powdery and rub off onto everything that brushes against it. I've used the Duplicolor Vinyl & Fabric paint before with so-so results; some parts came out good, others bubbled up and flaked off within a week or two (yes, I prepped the hell out of the surfaces), and NONE of them had a consistent sheen because the spray nozzle on that paint SUCKS ... makes a bunch of splatters and blotches.

So, uhhh ... whatchya'll tink?

I vote Other.

Find an OEM red part in decent shape and use that.


I have yet to see a painted interior peice that either matched OEM peices by color or didnt start chipping away after some time.

I have ONE painted peice in my Black interioer and it's driving me nuts. It doesn't match in the sunlight, and after 3 years, it's starting to show the original color in high wear areas. I'm searching around for a MINT black peice to replace it, but it's tough.

That's just it. There are almost ZERO factory four-eyed dash pads in good shape available anywhere, and anyone that does have one for sale wants a friggin' fortune for it. The reproduction ones are crap (quality and fitment suck and they split easy) and those dash cap things that JC Whitney sells are a joke.

Unless someone on here has a good, un-cracked RED four-eye dash pad they wanna trade me for a good, un-cracked WHITE dash pad, my only realistic option is to paint it.

Well, considering it's not really a high-wear area, then i guess you are going to have to paint/dye it.


I'd do a little research though into what to use though as you might want something with some UV protection since the sun will beat down on it. Also, prep the hell out of it and use rubber gloves to handle the part before you paint/dye it.

As to what materials to use i don't really know as i've never wanted to paint an interior part.

I'm hoping to just buy a repro pad for mine. That's really the worst thing about the old interiors is those damned pads.

The top console peice where the ashtray and power mirror switch is. It's the only painted peice i have. You can see in the pic the color doesn't match and it's starting to show the original gray through on some of it. I haven't found a nice one with a working ashtray yet. Don't need the ashtray door though. I have a black one
