I have a TMOSS ported lower and a stock upper intake off of a 93 Mustang on my 86. I have Thumper's heads. A guy I know is selling a lightly ported Cobra Intake for 200. I am wanting to know if this is a worth while swap, if I will notice any gains. From the TMOSS/Thumper setup along with a 65 mm FRPP TB I gained 40 hp and 45 foot pounds. I believe the majority of this power came from Thumpers replacing my crappy E6 heads. I don't want to waste time putting something on that will not make significant gains. It may be a good base for future mods though. I have never had an aftermarket intake, what do you guys think of the Cobra?

Depends on how well it was ported. TMOSS does a good job with his, and I know he will port Cobras too.

You may want to ask the man himself before you go buying it.

My bet is that if there are any gains, it will not be worth the time it takes to swap it in.

Depends on how much your heads flow. The ported stock lower is usually good with heads that flow under ~200 cfm. If your over that, you could benefit from the Cobra, provided the porting is done right, and not hacked. If you dont buy it, tell him I will!!!

Check around on Tom's site. I think there's a dyno test where someone replace his stock ported lower for a Cobra. He lost some low rpm power, but gained it back in the upper rpm range where the stock one began to fall off. I guess it really depends on how you drive and where you want your power band.

Exactly - in that example of Rio5.0's test (Thumper heads, 65mm TB, Steeda #19 cam), the average power over the 3,000-5,600 rpm band was virtually the same. He lost down low and gained some up top - no average gain. Pick your poison. If both dynos had been done from 1600 rpm like the one with the stock lower was, I bet the ported stocker would have eeked out a few more average HP.

There is a Corral member (member at other sites too) who is just getting his Notch tune done on a ported E7/Tmoss ported upper & lower intake/Buddy Rawls cam/long tube with X and catback - he's making 270RWHP/328RWTQ and tuning is still on-going. Shooting for 280-290RWHP. He's started posting about it on another site, and will probably come here when dyno testing and track data are in - he's a good driver too, ran high 12s in total stock from with an exhaust system. This is the most power I have seen anyone but a professional racer make with ported stock stuff. It's exciting stuff for me - I love to see the stock "crap" make good power and run hard.

Good info guys. After looking at charts, I know that the stock upper flows pretty decent. It's the lower that sucks donkey balls, and that's why I bought an intake from Tom. I was not sure about the gains, and kinda figured it would be minimal with the combo I am running. If I had AFR's and a Cam, I would buy the Cobra. But with the stock cam and Thumpers, I am not sure if there is huge room for improvement of air flow over what I have. I will think about it as I just spent 471.00 on long tubes. I wonder how much of a gain they will give over shorties.....hmmm, I am curious about that as well.

hmmm, 270 is the most you have seen out of a car with stock intake and heads? I wish I could get my hands on a tmoss intake, and have the heads ported. I really think a good set of done E7s, and ported stock intake would go 290+ to the tires. Wish I had unlimited income!

270 and climbing - it's harder than you know to get documented results, dyno AND track.

I'm ready when you are and you don't need "unlimited income" (or grab one used) - and remember, a damn good driver, the right gearing and a suspension that hooks can make up for a significant amount of HP..........

All the power in the world is useless if you can't put it to the ground

Oh believe me, I know all of that. Hell with my 265 rwhp I went the 12.5 in the sig on a stock suspension.

Personally I think a set of E7s done to the hill, on the right combo will make a ton of power. I knew a guy a while back running 11.2s on E7s, with an all motor car. Also heard of friends putting down 310 rwhp with Kuntz E7s, and a stock cam. The intake is going to be a restriction, but Id still stand by the 290+ statement I had before. And 290 rwhp in a 3000 lb car can go into the low 12s, high 11s range!

No big surprise to me there (was the cam 100% stock or a stock "spec" ringer?) - but the intake was probably not a ported stocker.......

No the intake was an Explorer (unported as far as I know), and the cam was a stocker that I believe was degreed. I could find all the information out...

The heads were taken off that car and sold (I have heard they were worth $2500) and the guy now has GT-40s on it.

E7s are something everyone frowns on, but I like running them. If I wasnt interested in looks this summer, Id be all over getting a ported stock intake, and sending the heads out... but the car has to look good first!

When you buy from Kuntz, it's not gonna be cheap - but it will perform top-shelf.

I know, a lot of the big name guys in Mustang Racing and even higher are running his stuff. These heads had all the trick work done, and as far as I know were NMRA Factory Stock legal. Just nice to see good performing stock stuff!

Wanted to resurrect this thread cause it seems pretty interesting. My question is what are some opinions on ported intakes/E7 heads vs stock GT40 stuff, and keep in mind it would be for a street car and I love low end power, don't care too much about 5000+ RPM. Also with a setup like this perhaps with a 65mm TB, are 19lb injectors enough or will they be maxed out?

sounds like you are looking into a similar setup as me. i have thumper ported e7's with a cobra intake...more details in my sig. i'm just running 19# injectors right now, but they're maxed out, i have a set of 24# injectors and a matching maf to put on though. 65mm tb works fine, i'm going to step it up to a 70mm though. keep in mind, when looking at my power numbers, my mass air meter wasn't hooked up (wiring issue) so she was running extremely rich. so those numbers aren't where they should be. i've since fixed that problem though. i'm gonna work some more kinks out and take her back soon, i'll post up what she puts down.

Cool yeah if you can repost that would be great. I am looking for a mild setup and don't want to lose bottom end torque. Thats good to know I could get away with keeping the 19#ers for awhile if needed.
